Post Windsor Jr heads and smog pump?

I just got my heads and was reading the info that came with them. They say I need to drill a hole in each exh port to use the smog pump.
I was think of just installing the smog tubes and not drilling any holes. How much would this effect emissions and would it burn up my pump if it was not doing any thing?

Drill the holes. There is another hole you also have to drill in the egr port. You are not going to lose horsepower so do it to stay emissions legal.

Well I drilled the holes today no big deal. I was worried about not hitting the smog tube, but all went well. Thanks
