working on an 8.8 the first time

I bought an 8.8 inch rearend the other weekend I've been working on since. As of now the rear cover is off & I've pulled out the axles and the drum brakes. I'm going to put it back together minus the brakes soon, and I need to know if it's ok to let it sit for a while without oil, or do i need to put some in, and what kind? Also what do you use to seal the rear cover(temporarily)? I'l be posting some Q's about disc brakes, gears, etc soon. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif Thanks for any help you can offer!

Just spray some WD-40 inside spin the axles so the oil gets in everywhere and put the cover back on.

Gear oil is pretty clingy and thick, just put the cover back on with a bolt or two and it will be alright.

As long as the gear oil is still coating everything, (and like mousetrap said, it's pretty clingy) you'll be fine just putting the cover back on. It won't rust. I don't think I'd spray it with WD though, as that would probably break down the gear oil. Also stuff a couple of oily rags in the axle tubes if you have the axles out.
