Yet ANOTHER head question..but about IRON only!

If any of you read my last post grumbling about my engine builder, I decided that since it MIGHT be the valve seals, now would be a good thing to bite the bullet and buy some heads in case the old ones are going to be pulled under their warranty.

When I started building the motor I had HUGE plans for the car, but quite frankly now I'm just kinda sick of it, so I'm looking for some trouble free, reliable yet freer flowing heads...I want to stick with iron. I'll be running them with 1.6 rockers, and I def. need stiffer valvesprings.

After looking at some flow numbers, I really don't think I want to plunk down $499 for the GT40Ps that don't flow much more than stock IMO for the cash (and I don't plan on working ANYTHING)...does anyone here have any suggestions? I was also checking out the World Products iron heads in the Summit Catalog, but I really don't know much about them. Any sites with numbers and prices would be appreciated too!

I run a set of World Products Windsor Jr. Irons. I have had good success with the heads. They make great power for the price. The castings, as they come from the production line, have a lot of casting flash. If you want to spend some time, you can smooth this out. Also, the components included from World Products (such as springs) aren't all that great.

The heads I run are stage 1 ported from Keith Craft (http://www.keithcraft.com/shop/shopd...asp?Search=Yes). They come pocket ported with a 3 angle valve job, 1.460 springs, chrome moly retainers and locks, studs, & guide plates for $899. That may be a bit steep for a set of iron heads, but these guys do great work, are easy to talk to, and they provide engines for some big names like Doug Mangrum. Keith says they typically see about 235CFM@ .500 lift on intake and 190CFM@ .500 on exhaust with the stage 1 work.

If you opt not to purchase a set of cleaned up heads, it's a good idea to replace the springs reguardless.

Here's the flow and tech information for the World Products Jr. and Sr. heads.

Hope this helps.

Excellent bit of information silver_pilate. I've also run windsor jrs in the past with great success. The windsor jrs going on my car right now also came from Keith. I'm not the best with flow numbers and things like that, I just go with what works, and for the money, it's hard to beat a set of jrs.

Awesome! I didn't even know about those heads...I'm going to check out the site now, and that price isn't really bad either!

I must admit I have NO idea what casting flash is. Something to do with imperfections from a mold?? Teach me :D

World products also makes a "Roush" series head. They're iron and a decent price. But I haven't heard anything about these heads. Has anyone had any experience with these.

I'm with mustangbelle. I don't know what casting flash is. Someone please educate us.

FYI - I'm running the P heads and trap 102 mph. This is with just a little port work. They're not the best flowing heads, but for the money they aren't bad at all(and they do flow significantly better than stock heads). They have smaller valves than most of the aftermarket stuff and have relocated spark-plug angles for better burn. The relocated spark-plug angle requires the use special headers, so that's a negative. Overall they're a pretty decent and affordable street head. Just my 02.

hey Eric what's your 1/4 time, and do you have lots of low end oommph?

Coupe5oh 01-24-2002 03:45 PM

I agree with the iron windsor sr.s, probaly good down low power, and decent flow #s, just think, a stock ls1 head flows around 240 cfm/ at .500, thats why they breathe like mad, but 235 cfm is good on a 306, will make good power, im going with edelbrocks maybe in a couple months.....aluminum though.

Good luck belle

Darn it Silver the link doesn't work!!!! Goes to the site but says error :(

Mustangbelle306 01-24-2002 03:48 PM

Hmm I didn't know the LS1 numbers, that's interesting! Whats the flow #s on stock stang heads? Even I'm sure it varies a bit by year, a roundabout number is fine.

Don't laugh, I'm not good off the line.... My best was a 14.2 @102 with a 2.4 second 60'. That 2.4 second 60' was my best effort with some BFG Comp TA ZRs. I was probably shifting about 200 RPM early as well (darn factory tach). I figure if i can get some sub 2.0 second 60' times and shift @ 6,000 RPM I should be a legit low-mid 13 second car.

As for the street, I have plenty of low-end and tons of top end. I'm really impressed with the TFS #1 cam. The last race I was in, I raced a 98 Cobra convertible with 3.73 gears and exhaust from a 25mph roll in 2nd gear. He was never in front and I pulled on him through 3rd gear at which point I had to slow down or wreck. I was very surprised.... and happy.:D

I have some dyno sheets if you'd like see them. The only problem is I don't have a scanner. I do have a digital camera, but I don't have a clue how to use it yet. If you know how I could post the sheets on here let me know and I'll give it a whirl. Otherwise pm me and give me an address where I can mail some copies to you. I understand how hard it is to decide what heads to go with.

Coupe5oh 01-24-2002 04:16 PM

Stock flow #'s are low, i dont remember, but a head such as a trick flow, can have double the flow of a stock e7 head, literally:eek:

although i seen stock e7's trap as high as 108 in the 1/4, 3000lb car, thats enough to put an air lid, and cutout exhaust f-body in the rearview:D

Canefield also makes a good iron head, and can be ordered from keitcraft, in stock, or ported, and are good for n/a applications as well, and can get good flow#s for an iron.

Question: High-flow intakes move your powerband up, but high-flow heads impove power across the board, correct?

Old Guy with 87 GT 01-24-2002 05:31 PM

coupe 5oh......i'm interested in hearing more about those canefield iron heads.........i've been keeping an eye out for good iron heads........i'd like to stay with irons for the same reason as mustang belle,i want dependability and it seems like iron heads hold up a little better and are less hassle

i know the canfield aluminum heads seem really good ......but i never new they had iron heads.......so any input about would be great

Sorry about that Belle,

Just go to

http://www.keithcraft.com

They've apparently been playing with their product pages, but if you'll go to the search feature and type in "Windsor Jr" it should bring it up.

Just a plug for Keith Craft. I've done business with them a couple of times, and they are always nice and willing to help out. Talk to Keith or Jason Craft. They put out a top quality product. FYI Be sure to check all your valve seals before you put the heads on. As a quirk, some of the seals on my heads were a size too big. I talked with Keith about this, and he says he doesn't know what happened and was willing to make it up for me. I'd recommend replacing the rubber umbrella seals with the garter springed design anyway.

As far as casting flash, basically, it's the imperfection left after casting the iron heads. Where as aluminum heads are usually CNC'd, the iron heads from WP, as well as those used in factory applications from Ford, are left as is. The runners are not perfectly smooth, but rather, they are bumpy. Not too big of a deal, and the World Products castings are cleaner than the stock heads, but you can get a few more cfm if you polish 'em up. That is a LOT of work, however.

The January 2002 MM&FF had a write up on the Roush200 heads from World Products. They look like a great buy for $850!
