Unhappy stock heads blown..now what?

What a bummer! After 177K on the odometer and a clean engine (never red-lined or raced!), they tell me at the shop that my cylinder heads are gone (white smoke coming out on exhaust, brown sludge on the oil filter, coolant sipping into engine..ouch).
I need recommendations on a new pair of heads with the following considerations:
1. Low to mid band torque (1500 - 35000 rpm)'
2. 50 state legal (emissions)
3. Quick robust response and durable (not intending to race)
4. Direct bolt on to OEM block (w/ little to no modifications) and stock upper and lower intake.
5. NMT $1400 pair
6. Fully assembled.
I want something I can bolt on myself over the course of a few weekends or perhaps with a buddy.
A friend of mine recommended the Trick Flow or GT40X heads but I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

i wouldnt buy gt40x heads, for a little more you can get better heads.i would get afr 165 or the trick flow 170.that would be the best size head for the stock bottom end.there around 1200-1350 for assembled set.you should also put a cam in you will allready have the engine apart and the cam will give the full potential of the heads.also new lifters, pushrods, and roller rockers

Bang for the buck would be to call Power Heads in California. They usually have ads in Muscle Mustangs. They are reworked stock E7TE heads. When I bought mine they were about $ 850 without core. If you are going to build this car in the future go with AFR 165's or
185's. Good luck

the afr 185 wont fit the stock piston valve notches.if you are looking for stock heads go on ebay and get a rebuilt set for less then 200.but dont spend more then 200 on iron heads
