Airbag to Tilt-column conversion...
Anyone here ever done this particular conversion? I'd much rather prefer the tilt column over the airbag setup... also, I'd like to get rid of the airbag sensors/wiring ...and lose a couple pounds while I'm at it.
How much does a tilt column go for? And how much cash should I be able to get out of my airbag setup? (excellent condition, from a 93) I was also wondering if all the wires hook up the same, I imagine/hope they do... There's still some wiring I need to remove from the engine compartment and under dash area that is no longer in service... any comments on doing that? I removed the heater core and other misc items from under the dash last winter, still have some work to do under the drivers side though. |

If you drive this car on the street at all, DONT remove the airbag. That thing could save your life in a accident with a soccer mom on her cell phone while driving her expedition with Continental tires that are underinflated.
When my 91 was stolen, the theifs' swapped in a 87-89 tilt collumn and sold the airbag. That was back in 93 though, now I am noticing intact air bags in the 4 cyl Fox mustangs in the junkyard, probably no market for a 10 year old air bag!!

ultraflo. i believe any Fox body ford from 84 and up( double check, not sure) without the horn button on the turn signal lever will work, BUT since you have a 3rd brake light, i would recommend it coming from an 86-89. also your dash gauge bezel has to be changed to make it look right. 90-93 had airbag and the column is wider than those of the 87-89 model. that is what you want. you can get the columns out of Cougars, TBirds and some Lincolns i think with a 3rd brake light. most already have cruise control in them. you could use the non- 3rd brake light ones, but you have to mess with a little rewiring. not too bad to do if you decided to go that way. good luck!
oh by the way, if you use the 86 or other models, you will have a different wiperswitch/turn signal.

I found a complete column w/ key and wheel from an '88 Mustang... needs a little touchin' up in spots, but looks to me like it shouldn't be that bad of a conversion.... I don't plan on doing the swap until this winter, but I'll still post a couple pics of the install for anyone else that wishes to eliminate the airbag setup.
