Question Gas milage

I have a 99 mustang V6 coupe, with auto trans. This vehicle runs average 225 miles to a tankful of gas, which translate to about 17 mpg. I did most country driving, most of time is above 45 mph. I wonder if anyone has the ame experience? Also, my exhaust pipe has pretty heavy of soot deposit, how about yours?
