Metal Clacking noise

Hey guys, im kinda new here so i figured id start i post. I have a V6 2000 mustang and when i accelerate there is this metal clacking noise coming from the engine and when u accelerate harder the clacking resounds faster. It sounds like two peices of metal clanging against each other. My brother told me it was the valves shaking but im still new to the whole car thing so im learning so i dont have a clue. could someone please help me.

Re: Metal Clacking noise

It's hard to tell you without hearing it first hand. my first guess would be pinging. Try switching to a higher grade gas (like 92+ octane) and see if it quiets down. Also, if it does it more when it gets warm that's another sign that it's pinging.
Pinging is pre-ignition where there is a hot spot in the combustion chamber (on piston, on valve, carbon built up in bowl area) that ignites the air/fuel before the spark plug fires causing the piston to rock in it's bore causing a clacking noise.
That's my guess, see when it does it more and see if any of this helps. Good luck,
