5.4 swap motor?
Aren't there any Ford vehicles that come with a 5.4 4 valve motor - like Lincoln Navigator or how about Continental - that could be swappepd for more power? Anybody ever done one or checked into it? Or even a crate motor?

Yes, the 5.4L 4 valve is put in Navigators, some Expidition, and some F 250 and bigger. And of course the venrable Lighting. The first thing to go would have to the hood. The 5.4 is much taller and wider that the 4.6. I'm also pretty sure none of the mountings would match up. Its possible, just look at the Cobra R, but practical? You would probably spend almost as much money converting a GT into a 5.4 liter beast as you would buying a Cobra R. ------------------ |

Check out this post. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...ML/002698.html
Also, go over to www.modularmustang.com/ there's a guy over there that did the swap. His board name is blue98gt if I remember right. I've also got a post over there about it and they sent me to his website which he goes thru his buildup but I dont' remember his site address. Find my 5.4L post over there or post another one and they can tell you his website. It's pretty sweet. He even used two upper intakes. Looks awesome. ------------------ FOR SALE: 1996 Mustang GTS: 5-speed, K&N, removed air silencer, 3.73s, 48,000 miles. $11,500. http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?388 [This message has been edited by 96GTS (edited 10-28-2000).] |

Also, it wouldn't even begin to cost as much as a Cobra R to convert your GT with a 5.4L. What model are you looking at putting that engine into?

Welll - actually it was one of those rhetorical questions from my perspective - I've got a Mk LSC and a 70 convert - but what got me thinking was a post on another site from a guy wanting to convert a 4.6 car to a 5.8 - I can't even IMAGINE doing that!! I'm always dreamin'/schemin' and am very impressed with the Lightning motor - and seems I've read that the block is taller than the 4.6 but that otherwise things are similar (i.e. the heads) so thought it must be maybe REASONABLY possible. Thanks for the leads - I'm always looking for neat new ideas. (Gordonville is just 6 mi West of Cape Girardeau) Besides, although I'll probably end up with a long rod warmed up 351 in my LSC, a nice 4 valve 5.4 and hopped 4R70W WOULD be neat!!

I just read up on that guys webpage. That was a lot of work he put into putting a 5.4 into his car. I would be pretty disappointed though if I was him. It only ran a 13.7@102mph, thats not a lot of HP.

13.7 @ 102 is just about what a well driven 96-98 well driven Cobra can do bone stock. You can do a lot better, a lot easier, and a lot cheaper, with the 4.6 Cobra engine. The fastest to date that a know of are, 9.9 NA and 7.something with a blower.
Ford actually has a concept Mustang with the Lightning motor and a T56 tranny. It really didn't work very well. Partly because the car ended up horribly unbalanced, and partly because the gear ratios in the transmission were off. BTW, the 4.6 to 5.8 (or 5.0) swap is actually much, much, easier. |

OK, ready to learn, here. Isn't 5.0/5.8 different bellhousing, TOTALLY different electrics, etc, or is it easier to DO all that?
Hungry for some tech details! Thanks! Anyway, the guy with the 5.4 custom swap had a killer looking shortblock, but I think his intake design had too short runners. Was wondering if something like the blower/4.6 type setup couldn't be done? |

Yeah, its a different bell housing, and since the T45 has an intergal bell housing, basically a new transmission. The electronics are similar, but not the same. But they are all very readily available and if you look around, pretty cheap.
Of course for the same money, you could rebuild the 4.6, add a blower pushing some boost, and make 2.5Xs the power. |

By the way the Expedition motor is a 5.4 2 valve, not a 4 valve. Reading into it I've found out that a 5.4 is basically a stroked 4.6 with 330 cubic inches. Just for your info.

The 4.6 and the 5.4 are different versions of the modular engine. The 5.4 has the same bore as the 4.6, but a longer stroke, but the 5.4 block has a higher deck height, so you can't stroke a 4.6 to 5.4, and the 5.4 is considerably taller.
