Default oxygen sensor contamination

My o2 sensors got pulled off yesterday and my mechanic said I was running so rich they were contaminated? Can running rich contaminate oxygen sensors in 6 months? The sensors were a dark black with black gook all over them, they looked pretty nasty, but i figure, they are in the exhaust. What do you guys think?

yeah mine are light brown after a year but i had a oil leak that ruined a pair in under a week once .

i would be looking more at the black gook as oil .

do a compression check and look for leaking injectors just my .02 cents
