Default Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey everybody, thanks for reading me. I have an 87 notchback 4 banger. When I am on the highway, and going around 50, and I put it in fifth gear and floor it, I get this terrible metal on metal rapid clanging noise. It sounds like the scrambled static stations on tv, but more metallic. Anyone have any info on this

Sounds like your motor could be pinging, try running some premium fuel, or a octane boost once, and see if it goes away.

Could be that easy, if you wanna run the 87, turn back the timing a little.

See if that fixes it.

What do you mean turn back the timing, go below 10? Also, where can I go to borrow a timing lite to do this? I have put high octane fuel, and 104 octane boost in, and it still does it. It doesn't sound like pinging, though.

Oh, well then its not pinging then. Don't worry about the timing. Thats a weird noise, I don't know.

It sounds like 5th gear is bad. Does it do this under any other conditions, or just in 5th gear?

I dont know if yours is like my 93 but 5th is not the most powerfull gear. 5th is the gear to get better gas mileage. 4th is the one you want to be flooring it in.

It does it in fourth, and a little bit in 3rd. I don't know what it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is loud, annoying, and embarrasing as hell!!!!! I've got $150, and am spending 30 on a K&N for my 2.3, but does anyone have ideas how to blow the rest?????????? I have been told that the K&N's for the 2.3's will take two more weeks to make, does anyone have info on that?????

Always describe the problem as precisely as possible in the first post. It sounds like you have a bad u-joint. Get underneath the car and see if there is any play at either the front or rear u-joint. If you don't find any, look for looseness in the exhaust system. It could be a muffler or pipe rubbing against something.
