Can somebody tell me??

Yesterday while hwy driving, the dash light that says O/D off in green began to flash. There is a button that says O/D down next to the gear selector.(Auto/ 95 Mustang) I had not touched it before, but did try pushing it and nothing. When I stopped then restarted the car, the light was no longer on, but when I got back up to speed, it started again. Obviously I have no idea what is going on, and I thought I'd ask here before I take it in.

I NEED this car, and I don't wan't it to die.

pleeese help!

Did your car rev higher when the light was flashing? It could mean your overdrive is dieing.

Ummmm. I did not notice any revving, but I was on the highway with the radio on (not loudly) I just happend to see it start flashing. What happens when the O/D dies?

Re: Can somebody tell me??

The overdrive light flashing means there is a transmission fault being seen by the powertrain control module. There are quite a few things that it could be. It could be anything from an intermittent vehicle speed sensor signal, to a shift performance code. In order to figure it out, unfortunately it will have to be hooked up to a scan tool.
If i was to guess what the code is, it's probably a torque converter clutch code (p0741, p0742) which means at freeway speeds when the PCM (powertrain control module) is commanding the torque converter clutch on, it's slipping or not engaging which could be anything from a worn stator support seal, faulty torque converter clutch solenoid, worn out torque converter clutch, etc. etc.
Sorry for the bad news.

Oh my! That all sounds very complicated. Guess it's time for a new car!

Not nessicarily. You can just get it rebuilt and you're off and running.

As far as what the problem actually is....you are sooo better off talking to 84lx89gt. He seems to know what he is talkingabout. I have no idea when it comes to automatics. Too many pieces for me to understand, not to mention I don't care to understand.

Re: Can somebody tell me??

If i were you i'd take it to a shop and have them diagnose what the problem is, it may be a fairly simple repair like a solenoid which wouldn't cost too much, a transmission overhaul costs usually between $1500 to $2500 depending and a replacement (remanufactured) $2500-$3500 or you could have a used transmission put in, probably as low as $1000-$1500.
You never know, there might even just be a damaged wire or something simple that won't cost that much (relatively). Keep us posted ;)
