98 mustang rear end swap with a 96 XR7
I recently acquired a 1996 cougar xr7 engine 4.6(4 valve), transmission, and rear end(IRS). I was wondering if anyone had any info on if i can put the xr7 rear in my 98 stang. I own two 98's, and just so happens i need a rear. Will it fit? I have been told yes by the guy who gave me it. If not, I'll just sell the motor trans and rear. Nice condition too. only 45000 on the motor and trans. would like to swap the six in the blown rear car for the 4.6. did it with a buddy, and other than "sticker" price for inspection, it worked out great.
Any Help or ideas, greatly appreciated. |

It won't fit without major custom welding etc....

Re: 98 mustang rear end swap with a 96 XR7
i put a 92 lincoln mark vII rear 8.8 in my 98 v6 that i got at a salvage yard for 100 bucks. it was a easy swap plus now my rear tires (cobra r's 17x9 275/40/17) are even with the fenders and looks way better. the only down side is it is a limited slip and not a trac lok but are WAY cheeper then a mustang rear end (they wanted 500 4 a used mustang rear) plus the rear disks are bigger then the gt's. the 3.27 gears made a big difference over the stock 2.73's and even though at 70mph my rpm are at 2200 i get way better gas milage 380 miles stock to a tank to 460. just be sure to get the rotors and calipers cause they are different and the stock mustang wont work....belive me i know!
