Post Shifting?

A friend of mine has an '86 2.3 and an auto (not sure what tranny they came with that year) he was wondering if there is some way to adjust the shifting in stiffness and shift points. I know there isn't a whole lot you can do without a shift kit. But he's just trying to firm her up a little bit until he get to working on the tranny. Thanks in advance!
