The "K" in the vin number to start. Also, the vin is on the top of the left front fender apron. You may have to pull the fender loose and out a bit to see it.

1965 "K" were all 4 speed cars
1966 "K" C-4 was optional

Autolite carb, [not a holley] dual point dist., screw in rocker studs, larger harmonic balancer, special head, solid lifter cam, low restrictive air cleaner

9 inch rear and 14 inch tires.

All V8s in the 64 1/2-66 production years had Autolite Carbs. The A,D, and K Code cars all used Autolite 4100 series carbs, but the K codes carb was diffrent. Its floats were diffrent, along with the size jets, the Nozzles were also diffrent.

But it was still called an Autolite 4100. I believe K code cars didnt have vacum advance, and an easier way to tell is by sound. The K code is a Solid lifter cam 289. They make a very distinct sound as to Hydrualic Cam 289's.

Also, the Freeze plugs were screw in also.

Wheels and tires aren't any indication, you could get any v8 code with style steel wheels. After 36 years much of the original equip may be gone or replaced. Do you want to id a K code engine or a K car? The best way to tell the car is to check the drivers fender in engine bay(sometimes they will be restamped which makes me suspicious) The engine will have a code on block near bottom somewhere(forgot), heads have screw in rocker studs, recessed valve spring seats, and all of the other things that have already been brought up

In addition to the above, other K Code bits and pieces are different(larger and more free flowing) exhaust manifolds, a beefier connecting rod and bearing cap that uses 3/8" bolts and 9/16" nuts, a 4 bladed fan (steel hub with 4 aluminum blades attached with 5 rivets each, a larger 3 7/8" dia steel alternator pulley, if it has a rally pac, it will have an 8,000 rpm tach in place of the 6,000 rpm unit used on the A or C code cars and a unique clutch equalizer bar (Z bar)to clear the differently shaped HiPo exhaust manifolds. If the original engine is still in the car the cars VIN # will be stamped on the front of the block on the passengers side about 1" above the oil pan
