Default "Tach"y question . . .

Folks-
I'm currently unmothballing my 1979 ponycar. I got it running and noticed that the stock tach now will run for a few minutes then peg out past 6K rpm. Obviously the engine remains at the same speed. When I turn the car off, then back on, the tach peggs again - without the engine running. Anyone ever seen this and fixed it?

No fuses are blown, and the tach worked when the car was put away. Are there any circuit breakers or resistors in the tach?

Probably just bad wiring. My bf's 89 GT's tach would stay at 3 grand all the time (engine running normal). On occasion it would work like it was supposed to.

You're probably right; I hate tracing wiring problems. They are as bad as, if not worse than, vacuum leaks. I guess it's off to the wiring diagrams - glad I got those!

Any suggestions on the best place to start?

LOL yeah my bf was like screw it. He'd just listen to the engine to sknow when to shift. Um I don't know where to start. I guess by tearing apart the dash
