Re: 4cyl mustang i need power
What are you expecting to get out of it?
You can do intake changes (K&N filter, remove the silencer, porting the intake) for cheap. DO not gut the intake. You can improve the torque by changing rear end gears. You can always throw in a 50 to 100HP shot for fun. That still only brings you to 150HP-200HP. Bottom line is you won't get too much out of the NA 2.3 with out spending some coin or building a turbo setup out of it.

Re: 4cyl mustang i need power
Do some searching on various sites on the net. They are easy to come by. But it is not as simple as just bolting on a turbo.
Turboford.org svoca.com turbotbird.com Check out some of the links in my site as well. http://mysite.verizon.net/meotchh/id3.html If you are not looking to spend alot of money start small. Then you will notice what works & what doesn't. Do not follow the process on my site for my build up since I have done many countless hours of research & spent tooo much time & money to build it so far. As I mentioned above start with removing the silencer to the air box & then replace get a K&N airfilter. Next step I would go to a JY & pick up a spare intake from a wrecked 93. Have someone (knowledgable) port & polish the intake. You should only have it gasket matched. I used www.killiansportingservice.com. The link is also on my site. He is reliable, affordable, dependable, & DAMN good. It should cost somewher between $50-$150 for the porting of your upper & lower intake. You can then easily swap between ported & unported to see the difference. Just make sure you do not forget to hook up ALL vaccum lines.**take some detailed pics before to make sure you do not miss anything** You can also look to upgrading the ignition but that can start getting into your wallet. For starters go to some nice 8MM wires by MSD, Mallory, or Accel & new plugs. Then look into a high performance coil & coil packs.

Re: 4cyl mustang i need power
When i had a '91 LX 2.3L, i remember - take off the intake tube and find something to either replace the entire thing (adapt a cold air kit) or use tubing or something to remove the intake air muffler in between the air box and throttle body, also removing the air box and taking off the silencer and cutting a bigger inlet hole into the front of the air box.
I think i may have heard you can adapt a 3.8L mustang throttle body to the 2.3L but i'm not sure. '86 SVO 2.3L mustangs had single to dual low backpressure exhaust and they had chrome GT style tips at the ends. go to walker exhaust home page and you can search through their parts catalog. A performance chip might help a little bit. My '85 2.3L LX's acceleration improved ALOT when i swapped from the stock 3.27 gears to 4.10 gears - that's my biggest recommendation. This is all i can think of at this time, hope it helps

Re: 4cyl mustang i need power
Turbo's range to $3000.00-$5000.00 and more. Gears will be the quickest way to boost take off speed. Go to a local transmission shop that specializes in this sort of thing. Possible you could get a different gear set up for around $500 installed. It is not easy to do your self. Don't get too high a ratio or it will be like running around in 1st gear all the time....very torquey. Stay under 400. Maybe somebody on here knows what set up would work best. Is it an auto or manual shift?

Re: 4cyl mustang i need power
Walker is the parent company of dynomax, from this page you can see that the stock replacement size is 2 1/4" - - http://www.walkerexhaust.com/ExhaustCouponScreen.asp
Go to the catalog tab and look up 1986 2.3L turbo mustang even the stock 5.0L engines only came with 2 1/4" dual. I may be mistaken, though

Re: 4cyl mustang i need power
OK not to continue hijacking this post, but...
My Bone stock, unmolested, 32K mile 86 SVO still has the original exhaust system with the exception of the mufflers which have been replaced. It still retains the stock diameter 2.5" exhaust system. That was one of many firsts for the Mustang. Many future advancements on the Mustang originated from the SVO or variations from the SVO. Do not mistake me for an SVO only kind of guy. I grew up around all kinds of Mustangs. I only recently entered the SVO arena about 6 years ago.
