Question Heat!

Hey, glad to be on here. When I first needed heat I would get that familiar syrupy smell but I would still get heat. Now I don't get any until I am almost home (25miles) and thats minimal at best. Hoses into firewall are hot (before and after switch/sensor?) return line not as hot. A friend said to disconect hoses and back flush heater core. I haven't been able to do that yet (too cold outside, no garage). Any info out there? I assume thermostat ok since lines are hot? Oh and I don't notice any leakage in car. Thanks Eng. is 2.3
