Rear End
Hey Everyone! I have a few questions and I hope some of you can help. First of all I have a 90 Lx which seems to have a rear end problem. It makes a winey, humming noise. I have to admit that I had some fun with the car such as power braking and donuts. I think that is the reason why it is acting up. Is it hard to put a new rear in, and is it worth putting a new one in? Should I get a rear out of a junked Mustang?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Assuming your 90 is a 2.3L, your rear-end is a 7.5", 3.45 non-trac/posi lok rear. It is not difficult to switch out rear ends, but u will need have jack stands, and be familiar with bleeding the brake system. As for replacement I would suggest getting a 8.8" rear end from a 5.0 or you could go even better with a rear-end from an 87-88 (AUTOMATIC) thunderbird turbocoupe which has 7.5" 3.73gears, trac-lok, and disc-brakes not to mention quad shocks. This stick is the same except gearing is 3.45's.
Any more info just ask. ------------------ Brad 88lx 2.3T s www.turboford.org "When a Saleen blows by the NSX, at least the NSX owner can say that his extra $30k was worth it because his cup holders work better." |

Try new U-joints first. It sounds exactly like what you've described. Kinda like a helicopter, right? Hehehe, I remember when mine went out, the night of a date. She still hates me...

The back of my car makes a humming noise too, but my dad said it was the fuel pump or some thing like that. It has nothing to do with the rearend in my case, so it might not in your case.

I know my thunderbird turbo coupe seemed to have a different mounting position for the quad shocks than the mustang. Welding new brackets on would suck pretty good. I did have the T-5 manual in my Turbo Coupe though, and it was a '85. It also had positraction, with 10" drums. Way hard to find parts for.

No, but my dad debated on doing the swap into his '82 Capri. We took a look at his Capri, my Mustang GT, our Lincoln Mark VII, and the old rear end out of my Thunderbird Turbo, which looked like an 8.8" unit? I could take another look at it tomorrow if I have time, but it seems to me the quadshocks mount in a different place. I don't think they ever used the 10" drums with the 7.5 did they? That's the other thing that makes me think it's an 8.8".

If it's humming the chances are real good it's a pinion bearing.

The rear is a 7.5" with track-lok and 10" drums, gear ratios very with transmission, 5spd had the 3.45's autos had the 3.73's.
The rear-end will bolt right up, however it is just a bit longer. As for the quad's u really don't need them but they can be used with a little fabrication. If I could get another turbo rear I would get an auto rear-end out of an 87-88 TC which has 3.73's, trac lok, and disc brakes.
