Idid this in a 91 ranger I had It was mass air I don't know if your 88 is or not if it is than you can runn 4#'s all day long without changing anything if you want to run more than that you need an ecm and map senser ( I got mine from Ak Miller out in cali for $600) that will properly read boost also on you stock bottom end you don't really want to run more than about 8 pounds even with the proper ecm.
