Post Best MPGs from 93 2.3 Convertible

What will increase MPGs on an A4LD equipped vert? With gas prices steadily on the rise it has become a concern for better MPGs with my daily driver..What kinda numbers can be acheived with the vert? Should I swap over to a 5spd? Thanks , Jay

It would probably cost more for you to convert over to a T5 trans than you'll save in gas...plus the time and effort to do that. you should get near 18-20mpg on average mixed city/highway driving. Freer flowing exhaust should free up engine pumping losses, replacing your oxygen sensor will make sure your engine knows exactly what A/F ratio your car is at so it doesn't run rich. A K&N filter/new-clean air filter should also help mileage. A good tune up is also a good idea just to keep your engine running in primo condition. Synthetic trans fluid/differential fluid should help reduce friction losses in the drivetrain. And the most important mileage saver is your foot, which must be hesitant to give much gas (that's probably not much of an option up a hill with the 2.3L). With easy driving i got a best of 23mpg when i had a '91 mustang with a T5 and 2.3L. Basically, just maintain your car and eliminate any drivability problems that would cause your car to run bad and you should be in good shape.
