The late-eighties fox-bodied Mustangs were good cars; workmanship and overall build quality was fairly high so any '88 that has been passably maintained should be a good transportation vehicle.
Parts are very easy to find (new or junkyard) and are usually priced fairly low.

I would recommend a 2.3 Mustang as a decent transportation vehicle of good quality that usually gets very acceptable gas mileage.
Of course, at 11 years old, some parts will need to be replaced and the current mileage and maintainence history will be a big factor in the overall reliability of the car.

The 2.3s can be made to scream...and get good fuel economy. If you want the car for a combo of style/economic reasons, buy it. Always know you can do a turbo addition and run much faster than near stock 5.0s, and maintain decent fuel economy/insurance rates.

Don't listen to this DRoemen guy. I have a 92 4banger, and its the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It's not at all fast but it does have decent pickup for a 4cylinder. But speed isn't why I bought it...

If you want a car that looks good, is reliable, and gets killer gas mileage, I'd recommend a 2.3 Mustang any day.

Plus, as has been said, if you do ever want to have a speed machine your 'Stang can be turned into one.

yea i know... i dont have the kinda money to drop a 5.0 in it anyways. For a first car, id be nice to have something reliable and good on gas, and from what i have been hearing, this mustang seems to be the answer. thx for all the input guys

as for droemen, id be nice to be able to do that but i dont have the resources right now for that kinda project, and ive heard the 5.0 isnt a good engine to drop into the 2.3 lx, id be easier to just go and buy a 5.0
