Question Intake scoops?

Hey all -

I'm new to the board but found everyone's comments really helpful to a new owner... I got a 99 V6 in October and I'm really stoked about it - I'm just wondering about the hood and side scoops with the phony intake ports. I've read a few places that those are useless? Is there anything I can do with those to improve performance or are they really just for show? I can't see why Ford would put them in there for no reason!

Thanks!
D
