Exclamation 3.8 V6 auto shift problem

Ok... have a little problem with my '98 3.8 V6.... the shift lock that keeps your car in Park till the brake is depressed is keeping the car in Park all the time.... if you sit and wiggle it for a while it will finally shift. I do all my own work, but this is an odd type of question. I don't want to just tear into the dash with no real idea of what has to be done. Not to mention I don't want to go spend hundreds of $$$ at the dealer who's gonna stick it in and break it off in me...

Thanks in advance

Will

I have the same problem. It will not let me shift out of park until the temp is just right. Wiggling it will not help. The colder it gets outside the longer it takes to shift out of park. Winter is comming on so I expect to sit in the car for up to 30 min. waiting for it to warm up enough to shift. I took it in to the dealer who replaced the cable. That didn't fix the problem. I hope someone out there has an answer to this mysterious problem.
