The next time it's acting up, take something like a small hammer (or blunt instrument) and lightly tap on the Inlet air control valve. That's what controls how much air is let in during cold (and warm) idle, but is more important when cold because it has to "fast idle" because an engine is less efficient when cold and needs to have a higher idle and add more fuel to stay running.
