Ok, don't poke fun, but my dad has a lot of crap on this computer and he insists on keeping it, so I have to wait a few more months until I go to college to get my own computer, so for now:

(purchased in March 1995 and still kickin' hard!)

Dell Dimension XPS
Originally 133 mHz, Pentium I, 16 MB ram
Upgraded to a 400 mHz, Pentium II, 96 MB ram

Original hard drive was 1.5 gig, we added a second hard drive that's 6.5 gig....

Still runnin' Windows 98 up in here too.....

Oh yeah, I have a CDRW too......

Looks like alot of AMD's? Are they really OK? I'm more of an Intel guy myself.

Intel was better until processor speeds broke beyond the gigahertz mark...now AMD is just as good, excelling faster, and cheaper

Let's see if I can remember everything

My two computer's i've built
Dorm comp
CPU - XP1600+ running at 1.53Ghz
Motherboard - msi k7n420 pro
memory - 512MB crucial pc2100 @ cas2
heatsink - alpha pal8045 w/ ystech fan(30cfm)
video - geforce2 mx400
hard drives - ibm 60gxp 60GB, western digital wd800jb 80GB
Drives - Pioneer 16x dvd drive, lg 40x/10x/40x cd-rw
firewire card
pc power and cooling turbo cool 300 watt power supply
winxp professional
logitech mouse and intel wireless mouse
lexmark z12 printer(free w/ 3 months internet)
dell 17" monitor(free, old part from a comp at work)
klipsch proaudio 2.1 speakers
campus network

Comp sitting at home
CPU - XP1600+ running at 1.6Ghz(1800+ equivalent)
Motherboard - Abit KG7
Memory - 512MB crucial pc2100 @ cas2
heatsink - alpha pal8045 w/ ystech fan(30cfm)
video - ati radeon 64mb
soundcard - sound blaster live
hard drives - ibm 60gxp 40GB, maxtor 80GB
Drives - HP 12x dvd drive, sony 12x/8x/24x cd-rw
firewire card
winxp professional
generic mouse and intel wireless mouse
lexmark printer
generic 16" monitor
altec lansing 4.1 speaker
cable modem

It's getting to the point where intel processors and amd processors excel in different areas. So to know which one is better you have to look at what you use your comp for the most and then see which processor does better. You have to think now, you can't just pick the one with the higer mhz number. If you hate noise you're probably better off with intel, amd processors tend to run hot and require a better heatsink(faster, and thus, louder fan) than pentiums.

Wow lot of athlon chips... Im surprized as AMD has steadily been losing market share.

I don't really prefer one brand over the other, but in the 2.5ghz spectrum INTEL is cheaper, more stable and faster.

In the 1.5-1.8ghz area, the amd chips are dirty cheap.

I have a Athlon XP1500 Laptop
256MB DDR266
CDRW/DVD Combo
14.1" Screen
802.11 Wireless Card

I really only use it for surfing the web though.

2.5ghz...i knew tehy went that high, but i was basing my opinion on the 1.5-1.8 area like you mentioned...i stopped keeping track of them after everything starting getting too high to care...you dont notice a difference between a 1ghz and a 2ghz IMO, its all about the RAM now....

How come it took so long to get from like 133 mHz to 1 gHz, but it took no time to get clear up to 2.5 gHz after that? Is technology just accelerating that quickly?

Ok...this is coming in late, but I have the P4 1.8 GHZ w/ 1/2gig rambus RD ram--all bought a 1 1/2 years ago...talk about pricy, but it's still kickin @ss.

As for the advance in technology, the military has 30+ ghz comps...I've seen a few at my school--they are monsters. The towers are about 12' tall...and they have their own AC units (ok, that exagerating...but they're huge). These things run so many simultaneous programs it's not even funny. The technology is out there, but the demand has (and probably never will) catch up. Besides, who needs a 30 GHZ computer???

There is a Law that was made up by a guy in the late 70's. I can't remember the name of it now, but what it states, is that every 18 months silicon microprocessor techology doubles itself, so we are going at an exponetial rate of growth in speed and technology.

Ahh I was a bit off, the law was made in the 60's, heres a lot more info on it, is quite interesting if you take the time to glace it over. Gives you an idea where we are going to be going here in the near future.

http://www.intel.com/research/silicon/mooreslaw.htm

Another very interesting, but longer article on what the future holds as far as CPU's and what computers are gonig to do for us is this...
