Question Engine Stall on Startup

I have two Mustangs with the 2.3L engine - an '87 with AT and an '88 with 5 speed. Both cars start up easily, but at idle speed the engine begins to lope and stalls out. It usually takes me two to three startups to get going. Once I'm going the engines run as smooth as silk and I rarely stall at stop lights. Any ideas what might be causing this?
Thanks for any help provided.

check your idle speed control actuator and run a self test(key on engine running), if you dont know how to check the computer for trouble codes go out and get a hanes or chiltons manuel for your car...it will tell you how to retrive codes and what each code means

Thanks for the reply. I'll double check my Haynes book - I don't remember seeing a section on the error codes, but I have done a similar check on my Blazer using my Haynes guide for it. I'll check it out. I'm wondering if it might be in the EGR system, possibly the valve. It has never been replaced and both cars have around 120K miles on them.

Haynes manuals are good about including such detailed info. Check chapter 6 emmissions. I concurr with the Idle speed solenoid. It's located on the firewall side of the throttle body. Also check the throttle position sensor. it may be going too, but just not ready to give up yet.

Thanks for the reply, Pony Express. Two votes for the idle speed solenoid. I did not see trouble codes or the way to check them listed in my Haynes manual. I will review the info on the idle speed solenoid and check the part out.
