Post Thermostat

I am looking at buying a 1994 Mustang 3.8L V6 with 100,000 miles on it. In a recent email from the current owner, he said that the car needed a new thermostat. Is this a common problem with a car with similar milage? or could there be a larger problem at hand? Thanks for your help.

Does the coolant temp gauge read hot at all? If the thermostat stays open the car will not reach operating temperature and as a result will run rich and cause you some gas mileage. If it overheats you may have quite a few problems on your hands.
