rattling

Hello,

I have a 2000 Mustang, V6. Over the past 6 months or so, I hear a rattling noise when I accelerate above 30mph. Any ideas as to what that might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where does it sound like it is coming from?

Engine?
Transmission?
Rear?
Front?
Side?

Definitely from the front. Doesn't sound like it's on one particular side. Honestly don't know if it's engine or transmission. It's not a consistent or steady rattling noise if that makes sense. As I accelerate, it'll start to rattle, then stop for a half second, then start up again but as soon as I hit my speed it stops.

Ok is it a metal on metal noise?

Describe the sound you are hearing. Is it more of a tiny rattle or a low thumping noise?

Definitely metal on metal. Like someone dropped a screw in a coffee can and started shaking.

Sounds like it could be a loose heat shield on one of the catalitic convertors. I believe you have four on that car. I know there are at least two. That is just my guess without seeing the car or hearing the noise. It is also not uncommon for the heat shields to become loose & rattle as you are describing.

Pretty easy to determine or eliminate that possibility. Just get under the car & check to see if the shield(s) are loose. You could also tap to convertors with a rubber mallet to see if you hear the same noise. Do not touch any part of the exhaust system if the car is still warm from running, unless you have the proper heat protective gloves.
