Default Rare 66 Mustang, What's it worth?

My son has been offered a 66 Mustang, #5 of 30 built with the factory retractable hard top and the Pony Package. It need restoration, but is streight, no rust and all there. It has all factory documintation and is a one owner car. They want 15K for it. Sounds like a deal to me. Any help on value would be great.
Thanks, John K

Rectractable hard top? Never heard of one... if it was one of 30, it would go for alot more than 15k... doesnt sound right to me..

Rectractable hard top on a mustang i have never heard of. Do some diging on the car. If it is true the car would defenitly be one hell of a rare find and worth alot more than 15k. Make sure the car is real and if it is don't hesitate one second to buy it.

Never saw a "Factory" built one. I have seen several of them through out the years. They're kind of neat. There was, maybe still is, a company that converts hardtop Mustangs to the retractable. I understand it was designed by the man that designed it for Ford in 57-59 Galaxie.

As stated above, don't think it was a Ford option.

Ford did experiment with retractable hardtops, but what i have read is that they stopped the project when it was found they couldnt be made motorized. Check out mustangsplus.com, they did a restomod corner article on a new retractable hardtop kit you can buy, and metioned the original factory one. If its legit it would be worth alot.

Darn, you beat me to it bmxmon. Yeah, mustangs plus sells retractable hardtop kits. Pretty expensive too, and then there's chopping the top and other body prep work...I don't even want to think about it. Anyway, I'm sure there's a prototype or two out there.

I personally don't think the retractable hardtops look right, but if you like it and there's nothing seriously wrong with the car, go ahead and pick it up. I'd seriously do some research though. Also, you're going to want to take it to a good body shop and have them check the quality of the top and how it was put together with the car, as well as find out how well the body was reinforced before the chopped the top, if that was the case.

Pretty sure there was never a factory production folding hard top. There were some factory experiments along that order. There are, or were, some after market attempts to make a kit to have a folding hard top. Contact Mustang Plus in Ca. to see if those are stlill available?
