Default 3.8L Firing Order

I am trying to straighten out a 3.8L that has the spark plug wires in the wrong order. I have a Haynes manual that shows the engine and distributor firing order. The problem is that the distributor orientation is not the same as the diagram in the book so I am unsure which post on the cap is #1. I know that the rotor will be facing #1 when the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke but it is next to impossible to even see the spark plug hole. Does anyone have a suggestion?

What year? Is it a Distribtor or a Coil pack? MY 1994 has a coil pack that is why I ask.

It is an 85 convertible. It does have a distributor. That is where I am having trouble determining what post on the distributor cap is #1. The manual shows #1 just to the right of one of the cap clips and also appears to be the closest to the front of the vehicle. My distributor cap clips are about 90 degrees to the drawing in the book. I someone could tell me if #1 is next to the round or square cap clip that would help me greatly.
