84 SVO
I just purchased an 84 SVO. It has quite a few miles on it, 97000 to be exact. Here is my question. When I shift, or take off, I hear a slight thump that seems to be coming from the rearend. Is that the Univ. Joint or the gears ? How do I tell? What do I do for each situation?
Thanks, MC ------------------ Lindros_88 (_@___]] |

U joints are easy to check. Get the car up high enough to get under it. Be sure to use jack stands if you don't have access to a lift. Grasp the driveshaft in front of the rear u joint and try to twist it back and forth. There should be NO play in the u joint at all. Do the same at the transmission. If either one is bad, replace them both. They are cheap and usually both go bad within a few thousand miles of each other. A clunking sound is usually a u joint.
