Exclamation 90 mustang problems..... need help.

I have a 1990 mustang lx 2.3 L, and today I went and got the oil changed. The mechanic told me that the rear main seal is leaking oil. I went under to look at it and sure enough it is leaking badly........It has sprayed from the seal (by the tranny and oil pan) all they way to the cataclytic converter. my whole undercarriage is covered with oil. The mechanic told me i need to get it fixed (duh) but also said that the leak could get on to the clutch plate and make my clutch start to slip. is this true? and i havent seen any oil leaks on the ground. and i have been looking. why wouldnt i see leaks?

what i would do is go to an auto parts store and buy some either degreaser or brake clean spray and jack your car up/get safely under your car. Use the degreaser and spray off with water OR spray off with brake cleaner and wash off with water. Drive for awhile and recheck for a leak - if it's not there, something fishy is going on. Also, if it's been leaking for awhile there'll be blackish/brown tarnish marks on the exhaust and parts will be almost gooey from oil and dirt mixing together.

It's common for 2.3's to leak from the rear main so it may have started leaking. Yes it can get onto the clutch because the flywheel/clutch are bolted right to the back of the crankshaft where the rear main seal is and can get contaminated with oil.

Also, there may be an oil leak, but it's seeping - but usually it'll end up on the ground. also check and see how much oil your car is using - if there's a leak your oil level will drop. try leaving paper towels or something under your car to check for fresh oil drips.

Hope this helps.
