Rolled fender lips?
Quick question-
I have heard of using an aluminum bat to roll the rear fender lips... Anyone tried this? Do you just jamb the bat between the fender and the tire and just have someone roll the car forward or what? Does it just roll the inner fender lip without screwing up the exterior of the car? Any other ideas on how to do this? Reason I ask is that I would like to put some 17" rims on my car with a rear disk brake conversion (which requires the fender lips to be rolled!) One of the Mustang Mags had an article about this in a relatively recent issue. You can buy a kit to do this............****** I can't remember which mag it was. I'll look when I get home.

I wouldn't use the bat method if I were you. The only real flaw on my car is where the previous owner attempted to do the same thing you were talking about on the rear fenders. I remember talking with the dude I bought the car from over the phone as he explained to me that the fenders were the only real flaw on the car. He said "it looks like someone used a bat to roll the lip of the fender." It didn't come out really bad...but it is a flaw. I guess when I have the car squirted I'll see how much effort it'll take to fix it. But I'm surprised you need to roll the fenders for the 17in. rims. I had them on my 87GT with no problem. It must be due to the conversion kit. Good luck!

[b]Check out the April issue of Mustang Illustrated. On page 35 they tested a fender lip tool made for 79-01 Mustangs, manufactured by Chicane Sport Tuning 1908 Del Amo, Unit A, Dept. MI, Torrance Ca 90601 (310)782-0063. The unit seemed to do pretty well in the article and retailed for about 60.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![b]

Why are you needing to do this to your car for 17's? They fit on my 1990 perfect with no rubbing problems at all.

If he's putting them on the 85 he will most likely need to roll the fenders. But I agree that if they are going on the 90 he shouldnt have to.

It isn't the 17's alone that require the fender lip to be rolled, but I am pretty sure that when you go with any kind of a rear disk brake conversion, that they have about 3/4" longer axles on each side. So the longer axles combined with the 17" rims require you to roll the fender lips (or so I hear... I haven't tried yet, but I want to be ready when the time comes...) Oh, this is not for the '85! Sorry I didn't clarify that!
Stang_ROTY - thanks for the tip on NOT doing the bat method. I definantly do not want to jack up my car in the process. I appreciate you saving me the heartache of dealing with that! That method never really sounded too scientific to me ;-) |
