Common Questions Answered
Q: How do I change my User name?

A: You cannot change it within your current registration. You will need to notify the Administrator via e-mail that you wish to re-register for the purpose of changing your User Name. They will then delete your current account, notify you via e-mail and then you may re-register under the User Name you choose.

Q: What's a Signature?

A: A signature is what you may choose to be added at the bottom of your message board posts. You can add your name, your car, et, mods or a slogan as well as links to your homepage. This can be used on every post you submit or only on the posts you select. This can also be used to link to your homepage or your User Ride listing. The signature option is available on the Preferences page. We encourage members to use this unique feature. Signatures should not be longer than 4 lines, including links.

Q: How do I post a reply?

A: Simply click on the 'reply' button at the lower left side of the message you wish to reply to. This will open the reply screen. You may then type in your reply. When you're finished, click on the 'submit' button below the reply screen. You may add an icon as shown directly above the reply screen by clicking on the button next to the icon.

Q: How do I make italics or bold lettering?

A: To make letters appear in italics or bold, type [i] or [b] at the beginning of the word, letter or sentence you wish to see appear altered, and then add [/i] or [/b] at the end of the word, letter or sentence to complete it. Be certain to use the brackets [ ] not < > as the message board uses UBB not HTML formatting.

Q: How do I add a URL to my message?

A: At the beginning of the URL, type [url]. At the exact URL, and thentype [/url]. This will appear as a highlighted link. 'http' is not necessary. Furthermore, you can also put a link in your message to a URL without showing it. For example, you could say, "See my site, Joe's Racing." And make the title of the site a link by using the UBB [url] tag like this: [url=http://www.joesracing.com]Joe's Racing[/url]. Q: What if I accidentally double-post? What can I do?

A: The boards are monitored, so double posts will usually be caught and deleted within a few hours. If you wish, you can notify the message board administrator and he will delete the extra posting.

Q: How do I edit my post after I've submitted it?

A: Click on the 'edit' icon at the top right-hand border of your post. This will open the editing window and you may then add to or change any part of your message. After submission, the message will show the date it was edited at the bottom of the message. You can not delete your message once it has been posted, but if you wish to have it deleted, e-mail the message board administrator and he will delete it for you. This should not happen on a regular basis as once a message is posted in generally stays on the board permanently.

Q: How do I link my User Ride profile to my signature?

A: Once you have submitted your vehicle to the User's Rides system, you Will receive an automated E-Mail message explaining how to link to your Car, and supply a URL and an "index" number to your listing. Simply use This URL in conjunction with the UBB [url] tag, as described above.

Q: My posts don't show up on the message board unless I refresh the screen. Why is that?

A: Generally, this should not happen. However, if it does, there may be a problem with the "cookie" entry the message board keeps on your browser. Either that, or when you registered your account, you elected not to allow the board to enter these cookies on your system. In an attempt to fix this, click on "Preferences" near the top of any message board page. On the form that displays, select "yes" to the question that asks if you want to store your preferences as a cookie on your browser. Also select any default settings you want, and then click submit. After this, click "Profile" at the top of almost any message board page. Log into your account, and then submit it - even if you do not make any changes. Doing this sets the cookies again to store your username and password on your browser.

Q: My post was moved to another forum. Why?

A: The Moderator or Administrator judged it to be incorrectly placed and moved it to the appropriate forum. Please choose the forum you post in carefully to assure that it is under the correct topic/forum.

Q: My post was edited by the Moderator or Administrator. Why?

A: The Moderator or Administrator decided that your post was difficult to understand or otherwise needed clarity to be effective. The tech message board, especially, requires clear topic titles and messages to be of help to fellow Mustangers. Moderators sometimes edit posts for that reason. Either that, or because you have violated our rules against posting profanity and the moderator decided to edit these words out of your post.

Q: When I post a message, some of my more colorful words are replaced by *'s. Why?

A: We have a fairly strict policy here regarding the use of profanity. As this started to get out of hand recently, we activated an automated "filter" that checks for certain more colorful words and replaces them with asterisks. Some people feel this is cencorship, however, contrary to what you may Think, this is a privately owned site and you do not have the "right" to post just any old thing here. Sorry. We feel keeping a clean environment, non offensive to everyone is very important.

Guidelines for Posting
Broadly stated, the goals of this site are to further the appreciation of the Ford Mustang, promote it's standing in the automotive world, with an emphasis on racing, and help Mustang owners to restore, repair, upgrade, show, race and generally enjoy their piece of American automotive heritage, The Ford Mustang. If these are not your goals or interests you may find another discussion site more suitable.

The Mustang Works expects users to follow a few simple posting guidelines (described below) and by posting to the forums you and others agree to abide by them. The Mustang Works is moderated and reserves the right to remove any postings that are considered inappropriate. Examples of inappropriate posts are those that are far off-subject or contain advertising, pornography, obscene material, racist material, materials promoting violence, threats or illegal acts, etc.

These guidelines are intended to help maintain a useful amount of order in a large site such as this and to promote better posting. They may be revised without notice. Users of The Mustang Works should also understand that this is a privately-owned site and that they are guests here. The Mustang Works reserves the right to revoke posting privileges and, when necessary, to permanently ban individuals. Therefore, it would be best to live by some of these following guidelines on The Mustang Works Message Board to avoid running into problems:

  • Do know the rules - Make sure you know the basic legal statements and guidelines of the message board that were presented to you when upon registering your site account.

  • Do lead by example - Nothing improves a forum more than posters who reason sharply, write clearly and have some information and perspective about it all. Be one of them. Don't type your messages in all capitals or just use lowercase. Show intelligence by writing in proper english with a good level of grammar. Message written in all capital letters comes across as the author is yelling at everyone, and a messages written entirely in lowercase gives the impression you are not very bright.

  • Do preview - Preview twice, post once. Since the Message Board does not have a spell checker, it's actually a good idea to write your message, and then cut and paste it into your E-Mail client (I use Netscape's built in E-Mail) and spell check it, check formatting, etc. Once you have cleaned up your posting of any spelling or formatting errors, then cut and paste it back into the posting form in the web page and submit your message. Remember that it's best to only use a return (enter key) between paragraphs and let the HTML page the message will appear in format each paragraph unless you're entering a list you want formatted to your specifications.

  • Do keep it clean - A bruise or two between Mustangers is tolerable in the heat of discussion, but refrain from abusive attacks, engaging in senseless flame wars and using profane language. Considering we're basically a performance car site it's hard to be a totally family site too, but that's what we aim for when at all possible. The Mustang Works is a large, friendly community of folks who share the same interest, Ford Mustangs, and the moderators will do what is necessary to ensure it stays a friendly, non-combative environment.

  • Do use a public chat room or personal e-mail - if you want to talk things over or settle a score (so to speak) off site. If your posts cannot be of some benefit or interest to others but is simply a personal argument between two members, it doesn't belong on the message board.

  • Do use common sense - if you read a classified or a post that sounds too good (or too strange) to be true, it probably is. Think about giving technical advice and be sure you would do what you're advising someone else to do with their Mustang. If not, then don't post it.

  • Do stay on topic - If you are going to post a link to an article or web site, be sure you place it in the correct forum and topic area. Be aware, however, that we take an anti-link stance on this site because there is a fine line between posting a link because it contains pertinent information to answer/help someone looking for information and a free advertising plug. Remember, this site is free and the only way it stays in operation is through making advertising revenue. Therefore, we expect someone, or a company, that wants their web site linked to on The Mustang Works in most any fashion to pay for it. However, we do have an open policy in our free automotive links section, and anyone or any company may add their web site to our listings. If you run a web site, or are affiliated with a web site, it is acceptable to add a link using UBB Code in your message board signature profile. However, it should be short and to the point, and not contain text that would qualify as advertising.

  • Don't use dozens of smilies - The Mustang Works message board has several features that allow users to add graphical "smilies" to their messages. These are neat, and can even add emotion to a post, when used properly. However, keep their use to an acceptable level and try to generally use them only when it serves to add emotional expression to what you are saying in a post. Adding 25 big cheesie smiles to your post just because is a waste of everyone's bandwidth.

  • Don't enter huge, dozen line long signatures to your profile - The Message Board allows a user to configure a signature to be appended to their posts. Many times, users will enter what type of car they have in their signature with a brief description. This is fine, but keep your signature down to a maximum of 4 lines, with minimal verbiage. Entering every single modification to your car, and using a dozen lines crammed full of text, is simply not acceptable. No one wants to scroll through your entire car profile every time you post a message. This is bad form and will no longer be tolerated. If you wish to post your car specs for fellow members to view, please use the User's Rides system, that is what it is meant for. Once you have a User's Rides listing you can use UBB Code to link your car in your message board signature to your listing. You will receive information on how to do this via E-Mail upon submitting your listing. Keep in mind that users who persist on violating this rule will have their posting privileges turned off until they change their signature profile to a reasonable length.

  • Don't jump threads - If you get involved in an argument in one thread, it's considered poor manners to restart the previous argument in the middle of an unrelated thread.

  • Don't spam - Post your message once, in one forum, under one topic. Multiple posts, especially across different forums, will be deleted.

  • Don't violate poster privacy - Don't reveal online another person's phone number, address, or other information that the person hasn't already made public for everyone on The Mustang Works. Many people value their online privacy, so respect their wishes. Ask them before you post something of a private or personal nature.

  • Don't give out personal info - If you are asked for an e-mail address, the best advice usually is to forward the request to the friend. He or she can decide whether to respond.

  • Don't play games - Don't represent yourself as another person, create or use another screen name to avoid a revocation of posting privileges, misrepresent the site or your role in it, and don't misrepresent a contribution you've made.

  • Don't be a whiner - If you really, really find The Mustang Works not to your liking, let us know directly (mworks@mustangworks.com), learn to live with it, or move along.
