How much better do 28" tires hook verses 26"?
 
I have been unable to get my MT 28 x 10.5 x 15 slicks to hook. I also couldn't get my 26 x 9 x 15 Hoosier slicks to hook either. The Hoosiers are quite softer than the MT.
Now my question. If I buy some Hoosiers with the soft compound in 10" wide, how much better will the 28" hook verses the 26". I would really like to go with 26" so my gearing would not be to tall. The 28" MT did lower my rpm at the lights a little too much. It will probably hurt my 60' too with the 28" if I ever get hooked. Should I go with the 28" tall and be safe in terms of traction even though I'll be a little over geared.

I really feel that the Hoosier tires give better traction than the MT for a given size tire simply because they are softer. And my 26" Hoosiers are lasting just as good as the harder 28" MT. I'll also have to buy a set of 10" Draglites with either of these tires.

Sure have a lot of Draglites and tires forsale. Anybody need (2) 15 x 7 Draglites, 15 x 8 Draglites, 26 x 9 x 15 Hoosier slicks or 28 x 10.5 x 15 Mickey Thompson slicks. All my tires have lots of thread left. Wheels are excellent condition.

What suspension parts are you using? I had a hard time hooking up on 26" slicks with the stock arms. I run low 11s in a supercharged '88 Mustang GT with 3.73 gears. I use Metco lower arms, drag shocks and an airbag in the coil spring and I hook up fine now.

I'm pretty interested in those wheels. So you have 2 15x8's and 2 15x7's? Is that right? How much do you want for them without the slicks? Also do you have any pics? Thanks.

I have stock control arms with polyurethane bushings, 90/10 shocks, Eibach drag springs and an air bag. I was running 25 psi in the air bag with no visible twisting. I took the passenger side factory shock off and only have the drivers side working. This set up with the 26 x 9 Hoosier slicks worked well when I was making 530? pounds of torque. Now that I have more with the Victor 5.0 and 1 3/4 long tubes neither the Hoosier or MT will hook up.

Somthing is amiss.
What rpm are you launching at ?
The 28' get you about 2 extra inches of contact patch front to rear.
My friends drag car hooks hard with 28*8 inch goodyear drag slicks I would look at suspention then launch technique not tyres right now.

I think I have a too light rear end problem rather than suspension. My car weighs 2425 with me in it. I either need more tire or more weight. Sand bags are a lot cheaper than tires but will slow me down. Ideally, I would like to can get traction without increased weight.

What ype of rear gear are you using? With taller tires your gear ratio is lower. I know you that because of some of post state that you know mustangs well. You may want to place some weight in the back as balast. Are you using a power adder. I think I can help you. I had similar problem too.

COME CORRECT,

I am running a 3.27 gear with a 2.92 first gear in my C4. I was turning right at 6000 rpm with the 26" tall tires and about 5600 with the 28". Of course I haven't made a good pass yet so I don't know for sure what I'll be turning with the 28" tire.

I could certainly get traction with enough sand bags in the back but then weight also slow me down. Ideally, traction without addiing weight would be ideal. May not be attainable but I would like to try.

I was also running 13 psi in these 28" MT. Maybe less air would do the trick.

I am running naturally aspirated.

I know the MT tires tend to like a little more air then others 2-3psi more. Your car is light, is it completely gutted with just a drivers seat? Whats done to it?

The 28" tall MT should hook alot better than the 26" Hoosier. Not because of the brands but because of the extra height. You get way more tire deflection with the 28"er. You're also running an automatic. When I switched from 26" to 28" it made a big difference. Unfortunately I have no 60' times but my car won't burn out in first anymore. I'd play with the tire pressure and make sure your tire isn't spinning on the rim. Also do small burnouts cause long ones bring oils in the rubber to the surface and reduce traction. I believe the NMRA mustangs have a limit of 28x10" and they're on the verge of the 8 second barrier. You just need to play with the tuning.

My plan now is to sell all the wheels and tires I have and get some 10" with 28" x 10 Hoosiers. The Hoosiers are softer than the MT. I have both right now and I can feel the difference. And the Hoosiers last good too!

On the air pressure. WAAAAY high. Try it around 10psi or less. I ran 26 x 10's last year and ran those at 9psi. Now I am at 28's , so I exspect the same or a little less. When I tried my new 26's last year I started out at 12psi. I wasn't even getting full contact at 12. My 60ft's sucked and big wheels spin. I dropped a 1lb at a time until the contact area was clearly visable. Then I watched the 60ft and how the car handled at the big end. For me, too much air and the car was loose up top. I dropped 1/2lb until the loose fealing went away. Hope this helps.

Did you have any problem with you tires turning on the rims at 9 psi? With my torque I'm almost afraid to go that low. What 60' were you running and how much does your car weigh?

8850, I have never had any problems what so ever with tire slippage. I know a lot of people who are way faster than me, no problems with them either. I tried the trans break out on them also, 4K, no problems. I shift at 5800 and go through the traps at 6300 with the 26's and 3:55's. Smaller slicks need more air and larger ones require less air. Don't know why, but thats how it works. On torque, I dynoed it at 520rftlbs at 3000rpm, (my peak) and I never had a problem with tire slippage. I do mark them for that one day, if were to happen. My 60fts are ok at 1.50 to 1.52 but a gear change this year should help that out. My weight was 3075 with me in it. Best time- 10.13 at 135mph.
Sounds like you have a light car too. What are your times that you think it will hit when you get all the bugs sorted out ?

If you wrap the car up at that speed. The sandbags will be flying around your interior, which would pretty much suck. You want weight you could bolt down.
