street tire burnouts

should you burn 'em up in the waterbox?

jonnyk 04-15-2003 07:15 AM

No, under no circumstances should street tires wind up in a burnout box (exception: cheater slicks and drag radials). All you'll do is get water into the treads and drag it all over the track. Clean them off with a light spin on dry asphalt and you're set to go.

GodStang 04-15-2003 10:05 AM

can I second that motion?!?

mak375 04-15-2003 10:48 AM

at the track where i race you arent allowed to spin outside of the box, so its either in there or not at all.

Dark_5.0 04-15-2003 10:53 AM

I drive around the water and just chirp my tires to clean off any dirt that may be present.

tireburner163 04-15-2003 11:15 AM

I drive around the water, the back up a little, rev it to 3500 and dump the clutch, spin em good (no brakes), then line up.

my tires have always responded well to a little short burnout. i just roll through the water, not spin in the water.

GoPed2009 04-15-2003 12:09 PM

our local drag strip dosent even open the waterbox on street night (all street legal cars can race)

95ragtop 04-15-2003 03:38 PM

Just a quick dry chirp to dry them off. I hate it when people go through the water box with street radials and wet the starting line!!!

red82gt 04-16-2003 02:49 PM

Yup, around the box and give them a quick scratch on the dry pavement. On my sportsman pro's, I back it into the first edge of the water, hit the lock and let them go for ~4 seconds, anything more and they're useless.

Just my 2 cents, but I think burn outs are a waste of time with street tires. Not including a drag radials. But the composion of the street tire does not make a useful difference when you heat them up. They are completely different then drag radials or slicks.

Consensus

I agree with the consensus. Burn-outs with street tires (other than a short, dry, clean off) are a waste of tread and $$$.

I like to do a short burn out......2-4 seconds. Just to get em heated up and cleaned off. I hook MUCH better when doing that than just spining them over.

stangt00 04-18-2003 10:55 AM

I got a question. I use Bridgestone Potenzas on my car, and if I smoke em on dry pavement, they get a nice coat of sticky rubber. Would they glue up like that through the box, or should I just chirp em out of the box like your saying?

slow98 04-19-2003 02:35 AM

out of the box....

Water box burn outs?

Seems like some are advocating water box burn outs for street tires? Maybe I'm just out of it, but this couldn't be correct, could it?

All of the more knowledgeable folks I asked the first time I went drag racing said to just go around the water box and spin them very briefly to clean them off on your way up to the starting line. If you do a huge burnout with street tires and get too much heat in them they get slippery and your launch will suffer.

84LX89GT 04-24-2003 02:52 AM

I just like doing burnouts anyway so i'll go in the waterbox. My poorest times are without burnouts, but that was when too much traction would cause wheel hop (and result in less).

Most of the time i wouldn't, but i like to try different things each run, no reason to say "No, i'll NEVER do that".

aford50lx 04-24-2003 05:45 PM

If i run slicks i hit the waterbox, its good to warm them puppies up before the launch,if iam on street tires ill do a small burn-out just to clean em a little. On the street,it all depends on who is there and how many females are watching.....yeah !!!! LOVE THEM PONY GIRLS!!!

bigred90gt 04-29-2003 11:30 AM

I've done long nasty burnouts, quick spins to knock the dirt off, and none at all, and it made no difference in 60' times or 1/4 times. Suposedly, if you do a long burnout on regular street tires, it releases the oils in the tires and will shoot your traction to hell. I didn't notice any difference, so I just dry spin them for about 1 to 2 seconds to clean them and then stage. I have never gone through the waterbox with street tires. There's no need to. If you drive a v8 and cant break street tires loose to clean them, you definalety have no business at the track, IMO.
