Unwary Lightning owner takes a beating until I pooch 3rd

I was on my way to school today to go hand in an assignment and do some studying, and I pulled off the freeway up a ramp to a stoplight. Low and behold, there sits a brand new Lightning (red). I glance over at the owner and he's not paying any attention; my car was dirty and not looking great anyways.
I thought maybe he just didn't notice me, so I went about 1/2 throttle off the stoplight and moved pretty good. All of a sudden I hear a loud WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sound of the blower winding out, and thought to myself "oh s**t!!" I gunned it hard in 1st and powershifted 2nd at about 5500 revs, and took 2nd to the same revs. I had about a car on him when I blew the shift to 3rd and he went ripping past. I think he might have been reeling me in a bit also, but it was hard to tell because he was in my blind spot on the passenger side.
Wish I could have that race back again http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif That thing sounded insane once he punched it.

Sweet race man. Too bad about the shift. Is your B&M shifter any good? Do you like it?

Those Lightnings are insane. I'd love to have one of those things to run around in. Around here there are a ton of people with full size Chevy's with big tires and exhaust that think their trucks are fast. Haha.

I'm sure most of them don't even know Ford makes such a truck and it would completely surprise the crap out of them when you smoke them by 10 carlengths per block. Hehe.

Yeah I wonder how much faster the 380 ones are? There was a 360 hp version only running 2 tenths faster than me at the track...
And yes, love my B&M shifter. The problem is that I tend to have too slow of a clutch foot and too fast of a shifter hand, and that's exactly what happened here.

This year's model with 380hp also has an aluminum driveshaft and 3.73 gears (3.55 for the previous year). I've heard low-13s on street tires - about like the 01 Cobras in the 1/4.

69fastback 10-22-2001 11:01 PM

Yeah i am pretty sure the 01 lightings are just as fast as the cobras. Not sure how to tell if it is a 01 00 or 99 though. I think the 01 comes with the clear tailights. Well besides looking underneath for the aluminum driveshaft.

Clear tailights? http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/rolleyes.gif

yes 2001 lightnings have clear tail lights.

Crystal headlights and fog lamps also. Plus horizontal style front grills instead of the honeycomb style.
My father has a '01 Lightning and so far it only has a air injection kit on it, but it still pulls damn hard. I have logged a few hundred miles seat time, and it is a total 1/8th mile monster. It can pull a C5 out of the hole by a car and a half, w/ the C5 catching up by 80-85 and pulling a car (or maybe slightly more) by about a 100mph (close to where a 1/4 mile would be.) It does need a chip and lower pulley to help top end, but down low it is great. It is definately a very fun vehicle to drive.

91LX2BEFast,

Do you know what your father's Lighting will run in the 1/8 and 1/4?

91LX2Bfast 10-25-2001 03:38 PM

Not sure, he hasn't gone to the track yet. I personally have seen stock to the air filter '01 Lightnings run anywhere from 13.2-13.7 1/4, depending on mileage, driver, and weather.
The stock airbox is very resrictive, so the air intake is worth a tenth or two.

Those numbers are pretty accurate.

Yeah, these trucks will fly. I just bought a red 2000. First time down the track with nothing more than a K&N filter I ran a 13.56!

I'll be getting 3.73's, chip and exhaust as soon as I sell my '95 GT conv.
