Short Throw Shifters- What is it good for????

Just got a 01 GT and considering a "STS". The gears seem to far apart and third gear seems to be a problem when things get moving. Is it worth the $200 bucks to spend. Also, the install. How do you avoid tearing up the center console.

Hit me with what you got.

Thanks for the feedback.

I put a steeda tri-ax shifter in my 99 stang and it helped a lot. no more granny-shifts! i think it really is worth the money. ohh, and your center console is held together by clips... just tear the pieces out, they clip right back in. Install is really easy on the shifter too. I did it myself!

RedLilPony:

Tell me, do you have to reach over for the 1,3,5 gears with a shift kit or is it just a shorter throw?

Shorter throw like by how much... 1 inch on each gear?

When you go into gears is stiffer?

I was also looking at steeda cuz they say they have the shortest throw... is that why you bough yours?

How much did you pay? And where did you get it?

Thanks,

I have the tri-ax, so I'll throw my 2 cents in.

In 5th gear the shaft/knob is pretty much sticking straight up, so no reach or lean for any gear.

Well... I've never measured it, and I really don't want to guess, so I'll just say, "significantly" and "very worthwhile". Good enough?

Yes. If you are in neutral and just let go of the shifter, it imediately goes to the midle. But its not unweildly. Just driving is more fun.

The Tri-Ax is put together extremely well (machining, matrails, ect.), and comes highly recomended from almost every one that uses it (some like the Pro 5.0 a little better). That's why most people choice that particular shifter.

If I remember right, it was about $180 ($179.95 or something), and I got it straight from Steeda.

Thanks,

Hope I helped. BTW, the one concern with the Tri-Ax is that it tends to be somewhat louder (especially at low RPMs) then stock.

Props, Thanks for the info.

One last question, does the shifter kit "protect" your transmission, or any other mechanism compared to the stock one?

Would any one be able to recommend a subframe system for a 00GT, and is there any performance/driving gains other than your car will not twist?

What else would any of you recommend for a 00GT for starter mods?

Yep. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif The Steeda, Pro 5.0 and any other quality shifter will have positive stops, which stop the shift knob in the proper location to prevent "over shifts".

I love subframes. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif They are so under-rated/sugested as a modification. I would recomend Maximum Motorsports or Griggs subframes. Welded in, not bolted in. They are of benifit because they help keep your suspension members in their proper location so they can do their job correctly.

GEARS!!!

3.73s. You have to re-learn how to launch properly, but gears do wonders for the modular Mustangs.

RedLilPony 01-09-2001 01:54 PM

I have to reach for 5th gear shifts but thats just cuz im little and cant reach it!!! http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif

NEW MODS:
1 word... GEARS!!!! I can't believe the difference. Mine were about 400 installed. The 3.73s work good in my 99 GT.

Also... I would put exhaust on it... get rid of those cats!!!

A cold air induction system looks pretty cool when you lift the hood... get a few horses off that.

And if you dont plan on getting a blower, maybe look into some pulleys?

thats just what i think for starting out. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif

With 3.73 on a 99-01 GT, what are your shifts?

On my stock gears (i forget) on my 00GT, I very satisfied;
1st - 2nd: 35-40MPH (Lay rubber)
2nd - 3rd: 70MPH (lays rubber)
3rd - 4th: 105-110MPH
4th - 5th: 125-130MPH (Cruising at 3900rpm)

What would the 3.73 do?

Thanks for the info;

Do you guys shop e-bay? I've seen some incredible deals fly by... a $400 hood for $210.

Just multiply it out:

3.27/3.73 * whatever speed you are shifting at now = what you would do with 3.73s.

RedLilPony 01-11-2001 01:06 PM

I shop ebay! as a matter of fact, it's were I got my Steeda ST! http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif

As for shifting w/ 373s... i think its the same but you get to your speed faster. dont really pay attention! http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif

Lizard King 01-11-2001 11:59 PM

But that is no good then cuz you have to shift into 4th just before the trap on the 1/4mile.

No???

If my car was upgraded to hit the quarter mile at 110-115MPG then it would be great.

Then consider 4.10s.

ed1371 01-12-2001 12:14 AM

All you need to do is try out a short throw shifter in someone elses car and you will realize what you are missing. After I tried one, I hated the stock one I had and went out after 2 days and put one in. They protect it by having stop bolts that prevent you from breaking/bending the shift forks.
The shifts are solid, not spongey like the stock. The sticks also center firmly so the 2-3 shift is no effort.
