300Z Question

I was talking to a co worker and he said that the 1990's Nissan 300Z was not only rear wheel drive, but also that the rear wheels turned slightly in the direction you are turning. He said it was very minor, nothing like the radius of the front wheels. Is this true?

300ZXs were not AWD cars and I never heard of them having any proclaimed four wheel steering system, I could be wrong. Honda Preludes claimed to have a 4 wheel steering system. The only AWD turbo cars I know of are the Mitsubishi cars and their Dodge/Eagle counterparts (Stealth/Talon).

yes I'll have to agree with Ripper on that.. I'm pretty sure that a '90 300ZX does not have AWD! get under there and take a look!

He was probably thinking the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4's. They are all wheel drive, and they have 4 wheel steering like what you described.

I don't think the 3000GT debuted until 1991 though? Anyway, I guess they are pretty similar, kinda. Both have 3.0L twin turbo V-6's, although I'd day the Nissan's is better. The 300ZX was rated at 305hp or something, the early 3000GT's were at 300hp, and the later versions had 320hp.

Oh, and by the way, if you ever do come across a 300ZX that has 4 wheel steering, I suggest you fix it! http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif

The mitsu/stealth is the only car I have ever known to have awd steering and the mitsu is a much better car than the nissan.

I didn't think they were AWD. I like the mitsubishi, but I also like the nissan. tough to say which is a better car. If I had the money I would buy a Cobra http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...board/wink.gif

He may have been thinking of the toe-in alignment for the IRS in the 300ZX. That's the only thing I can think of that he might be referring to.

If I remember correctly the Honda NSX has/had all wheel steering, however don't bet your money on it.

S Howard 02-04-2001 02:56 PM

Or was it Nissan NSX? Going to research that one.

Honda/Acura NSX.

The 300ZX does have four wheel steering. Nissan made it's real performance cars with 4 wheel steering. These cars include the 300ZX, the Skyline, and the Silvia(the Japanese 250hp version of our poor 240sx with a whopping 150hp). The second gen 240's in the U.S. also got four wheel steering but it was a waste of engineering for such an underpowered car.

Rev 02-04-2001 06:14 PM

Just as with the Preludes, it had to go bye-bye as a rotten design, if in fact, it existed at all.

It left the Prelude for the exact same reason why it shouldn't have been in the second gen 240SX....not enough power to really use it effectively and both cars were light enough that they didn't need the extra help in handling. The 300ZX makes very good use of the system while stock, but it is more prone to snap oversteer when you add more power. Stillen makes a part to eliminate the four wheel steering in the 300ZX. If it was a rotten design, I don't think that Nissan would use it in the Skyline, Silvia, and the 300ZX.

Rev 02-04-2001 08:36 PM

Yup, that's why we see it so often in competition, because of the superior design.

I guess you didn't notice that I said the system is used in the Skyline and Silvia....it is used in the race versions as well(except 1/4 mile only cars).

And that's why it wins so many road courses?
