What's a Cavalier Z-24

I saw a 1994 Cavalier Z-24 5-speed at work the other day. The tag said 1nastyz. Are these things quick. What type of engine do they have in them?

bigwhitecobra 04-24-2001 10:12 PM

Hmm, how to put this........

Compared to a Metro, they're ok. Anything better than a Metro, and this car has problems. The ride sux, the performance sux, braking sux, etc. Now as a daily beater while the car is in the garage, they're pretty nice. But I would never concider buying one.

My $0.02.....

rbatson 04-24-2001 10:31 PM

They came with a v-6, I've never ridden in one but I would think its better than most econo cars.

84stangLX 04-25-2001 12:08 AM

There was a guy on a sport compact site that had a mid-fifteen second 1/4 mile time with one pretty much stock. They have around 200 horsepower i think, but the things i don't like about them is that they're front wheel drive and it's a V6. they're fairly decent vehicles, no worse than most, but it's by no means comparable to a V8 vehicle like a camaro, firebird, or stang. It's a decent economy vehicle like mentioned by rbatson. I've also heard that there's some common problems with them that require lots o' money to fix because it's a special HO engine and is a pain to work on. My $.02 is that money is better spent else where.

I've seen a stock one pull a 15.8. They are great winter beaters...

Some eeeediots in the area here put exausts on them... makes em loud and slow~!!!

Unit 5302 04-25-2001 06:17 PM

200hp???

Nope, try 140-150 depending on year and all that great stuff.

I'm sure you could pull off a really high 15 stock with the 5spd. My mom has one, I doubt it'd make it into the 16's.

GM looses money on every softop cavalier they sell. They probably don't make too much on the hardtops either, but I know for a fact they loose out on the convertables.

dinomite 04-25-2001 08:45 PM

Thats what I thought! My friends mom has a Z-24, and he always talks about it as 'the big four cylinder'. Chevy doesn't say on hte site, but its a 2.4L, read below, this is taken from the chevy site:
Quote:

The Z24 is revved up and ready to roar. Pure sports driving starts on the inside with a 2.4 Liter Twin Cam engine, 5-speed gearbox, tuned Level II Sport Suspension and 4-wheel ABS.

Choose the standard 5-speed gear box with tachometer or go for the optional 4-speed automatic transmission with Traction Assist. Either way, you have a transmission that performs well.

Finish it off with a Tuned Level II sport suspension and Performance tires and you've got the Z24 Coupe performance Cavalier.

This 2.4 Liter Twin Cam engine with Sequential Fuel Injection and balance shafts delivers 150 hp at 5600 rpm and 155 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm.

My goodness, after learning all that, doesn't it just make you want to run out and buy one of those performance beasts?

Hey unit, you're right, i was thinking of a different car....my bad....I was thinking of a Z34, but i forget which model that is.

stizzity 04-26-2001 08:25 AM

my friend has a z24 and to put it bluntly, they suck. they ride terrible, can't take turns, accelerate horribly, and sound like crap. anyone on this board should be able to take a cavalier out even on a bad day.

Not to mention they have a terrible crash
test rating. Like 1 star for the side. They
did a study sometime back and stated that
you are very likely to die instantly when
hit in the side, even in a minor accident.

I don't buy my cars totally based on safety
but I would like to live if some idiot can't
drive and hits me.

Capri306 04-26-2001 10:03 AM

The Z34 was the Lumina with a DOHC 3.4L. My mum had one until a drunk b!tch hit us while riding in it. Pretty nice car 'cept for the fact there was a TSB on the injectors and timing system that basically said, "replace all of it." Hey, only $5000 later and we had a nice running car! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/rolleyes.gif I was only 16 or so when I drove it, so anything with 4 wheels seemed to move fast.

dynomite, dude, you're scaring me with that chevy site article. I dunno if I can hang with that kind of power AND suspension put together! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/eek.gif

Hahahaha. My ex-GF had one for a day or so (loaner for service), and the thing rode like a tin can with roller skates strapped to it. I sat in the back thinking, "God, these things must be a dime a dozen to make." That was the impression that I got from it: cheap. Needless to say, she thought it was "soooo cute" and she wanted one. I was like, "no, you want one because you have a 1982 Cougar." http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif

The DOHC 2.4L is in the new Z24 Cav's. The pre 1995 Cavaliers use a 3.1: V6. Not sure on the horsepower rating though.

My wife has a Z22 (crapy version of the Z24) and it sucks. I've lost some mustang mods because of that car (twice I've got enough money for gears and that crap bucket calved and I had to used the money I saved up to repair that chevy crap :mad http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

I would not buy one.

My brother had one ('90), the suspension was so soft that if you dumped the clutch the weight would unload from the front end and it'd do one helluva burnout! I had one rev at me at a light last summer,I nudged to make it look like I was gonna go, counted to three and then unleashed it and caught him in about 5 seconds.

Hey capri...that is DEFINATELY the car i'm thinking of...lol...the price of repair sounds right...and now that you mention the name Lumina i remember (it's hard to remember all those stupid chevy names). Didn't they name a minivan like a lumina MPV or something stupid instead of thinking of a new name for it. I remember thinking one time when i was working on a lumina van ....isn't this also the name of a sub-compact car?!?!
