question on buying
 

ok im a just about to turn 17 and looking to buy my frist car. i definetly want a Mustang and I have found a few good deals by me but only bad thing is miles on the cars. One i really like is 94 really good condition new tires, no dents or sctraches, basically mint except miles is 142,000. its about $4,050 for it. Is it worth buying? or second I drive it away you think I am going to have problems? how are these Mustangs known to hold up? there is also another one i am looking at that i like too and only has 101,000 miles but the transmition has been rebuilt and some things to the engine have been done. what you guys think about that one? thanks in advance everyone

once you get over 100,000 your going to encounter some problems(its the same for every car), but I've seen many 5.0s with well over 200,000 miles with no major problems. It all depends on how well the car was taken care of. I've seen cars that have been taken care of with 160,000 that run better and have less problems than cars with 40,000 miles that have been beat on

I have 167,000 hard earned miles on my stang... Of course I have had my problems, but no engine problems, The biggest thing I have had to replace was the transmission(twice), but that was due to racing. I expect things to go wrong, so it's ok! One of The good thing about mustangs, is that there is a HUGE aftermarket part supply out there, and if you do have to replace anything, you can usually find parts pretty cheap and easy to come by. That sounds like a fair deal assuming everything is mechanically sound. Like Tireburner and JL1314 pointed out, after 100K miles you can expect some things to break here and there. My car is 17 years old but only has about 55K miles on it and it's starting to show it's age as well. Just make sure it hasn't had the tar beaten out of it.

500 miles on brand new engine! (v6 3.8 L)
new paint job

but now my dad is calling to get insurance and they are giving him high prices. so what should the insurance be for a 17 year old kid with a mustang?

Well, the insurance will be lower than it could have been, considering you're buying a V6 'Stang rather than a V8.

I'd expect that you're gonna get some pretty high estimates, if you've never been insured before. Some tips to lower your rates:

-if you've had driver's ed and can produce evidence of this, you'll get a discount for a certain number of years or until you're 18. Every company/state does this a little differently.

-good grades can get you a discount, if you're still a student.

-safety equipment like passive restraint, airbags, and/or antilock brakes can lower your rates.

-an alarm can also get you a discount.


For full coverage on my V8 convertible last year, I paid about $150 per month with Allstate. But my driving record was a few years ago somewhat spotty, with two license suspensions during my freshman year at college. Once I turned 25, that dropped to about $110 per month. Keep your driving record clean (I know, easier said than done) and your rates will drop over time. For know, try getting the car jointly-registered to you and your Dad, put the car on his policy with him as the primary driver and you as an occasional driver. That saved me a lot of money in my younger years. But it only works if you have a good relationship with your Dad, because on paper he'll be a half-owner of the car.
