I hate it when this happens...

This is out of a 360 Sprint Car from here in Ventura. It was running over 650hp on Methanol, and had a Hillborn mechanical injection, 14:1 pistons, and a Mag ignition. It was a direct drive with no transmission, and had 6.86 gears in the rear end. It ran a 1/5th mile dirt oval in under 11 seconds (not bad considering that includes 4 turns). In the first pic, you can see where the rods blew out both sides of the block. If you look closely, you can see where the forged crankshaft journal is missing. Where did it go? It's still attached to the rods (see bottom picture). The gentlemans name is Kenny Brown, and he races every week at Ventura Raceway. Feel free to stop by and say hi. Just don't ask him if he's seen any rods lying around.

Wow! Makes me really think about putting too much boost on my 5.0L... Better start building that 351, huh?

Thanks for the pic. Hopefully it won't hurt his pocketbook too badly, and he'll be back in the saddle again. Stuff like that sucks, but that's the downside of racing I guess. Was he overreving it or what? Did he determine what happened to cause this?

Actually, I never asked. He was back racing two weeks later, thanks to several good friends and a couple sponsors. His class of Sprints and ours will both be running at Ventura this weekend, so I'll make sure to hit him up about the cause. I'll let you know what I find out.

Below is a picture of local driver Russell DeBlauw getting it up on one wheel last year at Ventura Raceway.

700 HP, 1200 lbs, dirt oval, now I've heard that's fun. Better mechanical casualties than the flesh and bone kind.

If you don't have mud in your beer, you're not racing.

I have always loved all types of racing. My heart went from 1/4 mile to circle track when I was lucky enough to get a job with Bill Elliott. These days, I'm a die hard Sprint fan. Those cars are incredible, and the drivers are just plain crazy. my favorite job in the world is crewing for Jim Porter this year. We're first in the points, and we're going to see to it that it stays that way!

If you've never been to a Sprint car race, you have to find one. TV doesn't do them justice. Think about how big the TB is on a Mustang, then check this out:

All race cars should have eight throttle plates!
