Need snow tires for 88 LX 5.0 Hatch....any recomendations?
 

Hi All,

I have an 88 LX 5.0 and have to drive it in New England. It is my beater car but I really enjoy driving it. It actually gets better mileage than my 96 Explorer (wife drives that). I mostly drive highway (that would explain the 192 thousand miles on the car) and getting close to 23 mpg. Any reccomendations would be great!!! The last set of snow tires I had for the car were a set of Pirellis MS 195-65-15 mounted on another set of rims and they went pretty well in the snow but I am looking for better

The best tires are Bridgestone Blizzaks. They're snow and ice tires. They rock. Take it from a Minnesotan.

I made a similar post last year and got the exact same recommendation from quite a few people. I ended up just buying a few sand bags and throwing in the hatch which made a huge difference, but snow tires would be even better with weight in the rear I'll bet.

Get some studded tires.

I put some 4 banger studded snows on the back of mine one year. They were something like 195/70/15. The car handled like *** but it went through the snow pretty good. :)

I suggest Goodyears, 35x12.50 Mtr's. Oh yeah it would be nice to have a lifted F-150 or F-250 to put 'em on to. Might look alittle strange on a stang.

I wouldn't suggest a wide *** tire for winter traction. That's exactly the opposite of what you want for icy roads.

The narrower you get (to a point) the better your tires will grip on ice. There is some tradeoff for snow traction, but pure snow is decently grippy, at least compared to ice.

I am on my third set of Blizzaks on three different vehicles - put them on all four wheels and you will be amazed. Dunlop Graspics are also pretty good. And its true that wider is not better when it comes to snow / ice tires. Had 245-60's as my standard tire on my 2wd 94 Ranger and went with 215-65's when I bought the Blizzaks at Bridgestones recommendation and they worked great.
