max lift?
What is the max intake and exhaust lift that can be run with stock pistons/heads/valves/rockers for 87 and later 5.0?
I know that individual applications should be checked, but in general... thanks ------------------ 1982 Mustang GT [This message has been edited by matt cook (edited 03-04-2001).] |

Around .500".

The brothers performance web site has a tech note under roller rockers heading that says that you can usually run up to .545" without problems but there are always the variables like gasket thickness and whether or not the heads or deck have been milled. The year that this wouldn't work on would be the 86 due to the flat top pistons.

I would stay around .530 to be safe, if the valves float it could get ugly with anything more. If you need a little extra clearance the ROL graphite gaskets are .051" thick, most gaskets run .041 thick when compressed

Thanks guys, here's what I'm doing
putting E7TE's on a 82 mustang GT to raise the compression from 8.4:1 to 9:1. I'm pretty sure that the 82 pistons are the same as 87 and later (at least design-wise). This was the reason for my question - thinkin about doin a cam swap at the same time. has anyone done this? ------------------ 1982 Mustang GT |
I would have to say .520 ish

Damn, I missed that...I believe the 82 or 87 and earlier pistons are flat tops not notched like the HO pistons 87-93 you may need to go less lift .500 or so. Can anybody else confirm this...

I believe that the years with the valve releifs are 85 and 87 up. The 86 and 84 and older ones are flat top. I had an 83 GLX with a 5.0 and it had flat top. I might be wrong but I think this is correct years.

I know that '82 to '85 HO 302 were identical in terms of production except for exhaust/induction and i'm pretty sure that stock they have valve reliefs. '86 was the first year for the roller cam engine and it had the old style heads before they changed to the E7TE heads and flat top pistons for some reason. I'm almost sure that they're the only HO engine built with flat tops. I may be wrong though, but i'm pretty sure.

I've ran the E-cam with 1.72 rollers in a 87 non-HO motor with no problems. The best thing would be to clay the pistons with your cam and the 87 heads to see how much clearance u have. Also mic the headgasket to see if u can gain more clearance with a thicker gasket.

Yeah, I've been goin on what 84stang83zephyr says. That makes since - that my engine is 9:1 with E7TE's then the pistons would likely be the same as 87 and later, having valve releifs. I will clay it, but I was just asking the general question to know what cams to look for.

Well if racin85 is running an E303 with 1.7 rockers, that comes out to a total valve lift of 0.529". I'd go with a CompCams Xtreme energy grind, since they'll give you good HP yet keep vacuum. If you wanna run all stock stuff other than the cam, I'd recommend the XE264HR. It has 0.512" valve lift. CompCams for more details. The alphabet cams have a lot of duration yet not enough lift.
