Rear end
 

I just bought a 1996 Mustang GT. I am about to change the rear end gear on it. Which gear is better for my mustang a 3.55 or 3.73???? I am going to put NOS on it in about a year. Also what is the stock gear for a 96, is it a 2.73 or 3.27??????

The 3:27's were an option on the GT. Most people will tell you 3:73's will be the way to go. That's what I plan on installing next year. I've driven a 97 with 3:73's and it felt great and didn't really sacrifice highway rpm's at all. You'll have opinions on both sides but 3:73's really wake everything up for the $400 or so you'll spend.

I have a 1999 Mustang GT that I put a 3.73 gear in it and I can't tell you what a difference it has made. It is so much quicker off the line and have not sacrificed MPG (unless you count the quicker off the line). well worth the investment.

Do you have an auto or a 5 speed tranny? Go with 3.73s for the 5 speed and 4.10s for the auto. This is for the daily driver. Go steeper on the gears for a strictly drag car. I've got the 3.73s in 5-speed and love them. I still get great gas mileage. Low 20s on the highway and your in town mileage will also improve and it'll drop a few tenths off of you 1/4 mile. It took .4 off of mine.

It really took .4 off your 1/4 mile time? That's great. I also have 3.73s on my Cobra. The SVT book gives the 1/4 mile time as 13.9 stock. I guess with my gears and cold air kit my car may run 13.5 or less, huh? I really need to take it to the track and find out. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif

KingSnake- With some practice you could probably pull mid 13s. But don't expect it the first time you go to the track, and expect to drive the snot out of your car to get there.

With 3.73 does the car spin alot out of 1st gear?

When you go to a higher (numerical) gear there is a bit of a learning process of how to launch it correctly. The first couple of times you try to launch it hard, don't be surprised if you spin. But once you start getting it, you can launch hard with out spin. Its all about feel.

Is there much of a difference between a 3.73 and a 3.55? I mean can you really feel a difference in the car, between the two gears? I was just wandering cause my mustang only puts out about 215 HP. Just don't want to put to much gear in it. It gets out of whole real good right now, i just need some more power in 3rd and 4th gear. Thanks for the help.

If you have 3.27s, you will hardly notice 3.55s. There's about a 14% difference between 3.73s and 3.27s, and only about a 8% difference from 3.55s to 3.27s. So yes you will a significant difference between the two.
