Squeakin' Brakes
 

THIS IS REDICULOUS. A COBRA, SUPPOSED TO BE A TOP QUALITY FORD, THAT I CAN'T GET THE BRAKES TO STOP SQUEAKING. THEY SQUEAK WHENEVER I'M NOT USING THE BRAKES. AS SOON AS I PRESS THEM, THEY STOP SQUEAKING. YEAH, I'VE TRIED A BUNCH. EVERYTHING FROM TURNING & SLOTTING THE ROTORS TO NEW PADS, YOU NAME IT. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO BUY AN ENTIRE BAER SETUP. I'D RATHER SPEND THAT MONEY ON TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH GM. AND NO I CAN'T IGNORE IT. WHEN THEY GET WARMED UP, THEY SQUEAK LOUD!!! AND EVEN AT SLOW SPEEDS. PLEASE HELP, SO FAR 3 DIFFERENT MECHANICS HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO. AND AGAIN, THE ROTORS ARE STRAIGHT (SINCE THIS IS WHAT EVERY MECHANIC HAS SAID OVER THE PHONE BEFORE ACTUALLY SEEING IT).

My first thought was that this sounds like the wear indicator, but you replaced the pads, so that wouldn't be it. My second thought is to check for clearence of the splash guard. My brother's got bent and was rubbing against the rotor and made a squealing noise, but only when he was not braking, interestingly.

After that I would check the clearence of the brake lines, the back of the caliper, and the caliper bracket, espeically the C-clamps on the caliper pin.

i had the same problem on my 97 gt. it seemed the pad on the right rear of the car was put on and it settled wrong, i looked, and it was crooked....in fact, i think i remember the guy telling me that it was on upside down too....anyway, i would check that, because if that is the case, it is diggin into your rotors just like mine was, and i saved it in the nick of time....ps, it is annoying as all hell.!!!!

I appreciate any ideas believe me. I still have the problem. I talked to a guy with a 97 Cobra, his right side is doing it. He, like myself, has taken it to several mechanics with no luck. He spoke with someone that told him that the frame that holds the pads & caliper is bent. This happens due to heat, hard braking (which I'm very guilty of), & hitting a hard bump (which I havn't done). I sure hope I find the solution soon. As it is, the car just sits in the garage & I drive my 94 GT. Any help is STILL greatly appreciated.

The caliper bracket? You couldn't bend that htting a bump. Possibly heat, but that would be pretty difficult also. Replacing it isn't too bad. Just need a 15mm socket and a lot of grunting.
