1996 gt that pings
I have a 1996 gt mustang with the 4.6 sohc. The car only has 52,000 miles. Recently the engine pings at high rpms or heavy acceleration. The car has had a recent tune-up? I have been told it may need a mass air sensor? Does any one have answers or suggestions to get my baby racing again?

It could possibly be caused by a bad EGR valve. I had a 5.0 that started pinging because of a bad EGR valve. Since the timing is not easily adjusted, more than likely that is not the problem.

try buying a diff. brand of gas first. then maybe a higher octane, then on a 96 they had a octane adj. plug next to the air cleaner box. has two wires to it, pull the plug, it'll retard the timing like 2 deg., you can try to clean the maf also, have to get a special torx bit and take the two screws out of the top of the maf, use brake cleaner and spray off the two sensing wires @reassemble.good luck.

thanks for the information. I have already tried the higher octane. It was okay for a while, but the problem has come back. I will try the other ideas and let you know if it fixes the problem.
