Cutouts

Ive heard of a lot of camaro guys doing exhaust "cutouts." What are they, and can I do it to my exhaust?

Don't quote me here but I believe it's when they cut out a portion of their exhaust to make it more free flowing. I run turndowns which would be similair and didn't notice any significant increase.

Cutouts are little sneaky things that you can put in your exh. right between your headers and H/X pipe (or at least that is where I would put it, be more like running open headers that way). If you have a Jeg's, or Summit look in there in the exh section and you should see them. They are kinda like a Y-pipe if you will. Basically the ones that I have seen (electric and mechanical) are little things about 3-4in long and they have a 45degree opening comeing off of them with a butter-fly in it. When the butter-fly is closed then your exh just goes straight through as it normally would to the muff ex. With the butter-fly open the exh gasses go out of the 45 degree opening instead of going trough your whole exh. Basically, butter-fly open= open headers, butter-fly closed= full exh. Mechanical is manualy operated, electrical is switch operated.

I went to Summitracing.com and found an item called Exhaust Cutout for 2 1/2 inch tubing each: $27. Is that what I want? I couldnt find any more info on it. Do you think that if I went to my local high performance muffler shop, that they could do it for me? Thanks again.

Yes summit and jegs both have them. The ones that I saw in the jeg's cat. have a cover with three wing nuts on it that you have to take off to uncap it. I'm not sure about the ones in summit though.

I talked to my exhaust guy and he said he wouldnt advise it. He said he's had camaro guys come in with holes in their floorboards that have been burned through by the cutouts. He said I wouldnt pick up much HP anyway. I think Im gonna do pullies next.
