Remove Intake Silencer on 4.6?
Hello, Ive Been in Mustangs for Longer then I Could Drive But This is My First 4.6,
So i feel like a kid again with this questions im imbarresed LOL.. Does removing the Air Intake Silencer On the 4.6 Help like it does on the 5.0's? Cause i THINK I Heard that it could hurt performance Rather then Help it? So Hook a New 4.6 Guy with some Info.. wow i feel 9 years old again LOL 2001 Bullitt |
Well, you could always take it off and try it. If you don't like the results, then put it back on. It only takes a few minutes.
I removed it on my GT and Cobra. If nothing else, it sounds cool at WOT, hearing the air whistling into the intake, heh. Some ppl claim to have dyno'd 1-2 hp higher with it removed. I've never heard of anyone losing power without it. ------------------ T-Bones 1997 Cobra#6342 born 6-11-97 Wht/blk, Pro 5.0,FRPP 4.56's, aluminum driveshaft, FRPP throttle body, C&L 80mm MAF, K&N, Steeda U/D pulleys, Steeda timing adjuster, Flowmasters, s/f connectors, FRPP pro springs, BBK caster/cambers. http://web.ndak.net/~topel/TBone1.jpg My old 96GT |
I've seen dyno results that indicate a 2-3 hp loss when you remove the intake silencer on a 99+ GT without changing to a cold air induction.

I have a 97 4.6, I just took mine off and to me, it felt a bit faster. I could really tell the difference!

Haven't seen a loss but I can tell you with a removed silencer or a modified silencer (mine is modified) you will the notice the RPMs climb quicker. Prior to modifying my silencer, it felt like the engine was just making noise, after modifying it...VRRRRRROOOOMMMM!! I cut 3" off the end of mine and placed a 4" tube in it to extend into the fenderwell.

I just noticed that you have a Bullit rather than a normal '01 GT, so it's hard to say. According to the magazines, removing the intake silencer was always worth a couple horsepower on any '86 and up car until they tried it on the '99 and up and lost a couple horsepower. Since the Bullit has a different intake setup, it's hard to say. I'd try it and see.

Took mine off. I have never dynoed my car, so I can't tell for sure. However, the butt-o-meter felt a slight increase in giddy-up. I am actually planning on puting it back on, now that I know the feel of my car, just to see if there's any difference. I have read a LOT on this, and there is much controversy. Personally, I go with what I feel in the seat of the pants. ------------------ "Back in the day" owned a '66 289 and later a black '68 289. Current - '00 white GT w/K&N and Flowmasters.
