4.10's on the street...

I'm about to get in a set of 4.10's for my car and was wondering what to expect as far as street manners. I was going to go with 3.73's based on their popularity but found the 4.10's at a better price and was concerned as to the difference. Anyone out there who has 4.10's and could give me a little input would be much appreciated...especially if you've driven a 3.73 geared car at some point. Sorry, i know this has probably been asked a bunch in the past. Thanks in advance...Brian

Expect to turn about 3 grand at 75 MPH.
It's very streetable. And the benefits of kicking the crap out of everybody is well worth the 1 or 2 mpg you could lose.
My car runs about .2 to .3 quicker than my buddies similar notch w/ 3.73's

If you have a manual tranny expect to be starting off in second as first gear is practically unuseable. Or so I hear, I still have 2.73's http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

Thanks a lot for all the response guys...makes me feel MUCH better about putting them in. Always heard the 3.73's for 5spds/4.10's for auto's rule of thumb but im glad all you who answered like the 4.10's. Can't wait to get them in the car now...thanks again.

I just had mine put in and they are great. i use first gear all the time. i run about 2to 24 grand on highway. nice buy!

rtz 03-08-2001 07:46 PM

I'll run my 3.27's for a while and then I might consider 4.10's.

I just don't want to get 4.10's and then wish I had gotten 3.73's instead.

Or get 3.73's and then wish I'd gotten 4.10's instead.

The way I look at it if u wanna race it and have some mods on the car 4.10's the only way to go.I changed to a c4 last fall and run 26 et streets, the thing tachs 3000-3200 at 60mph.I don't care about mpg it's my race car!I loved the gears with my 5 speed, cruise rpm was about 2200-2500,if u want 50mpg buy a honda(just kiddin about the honda)

But won't cruising down the highway for 200+ miles at ~3000 rpm wear out the motor?

Cruising at 60mph @1000rpm is just like having the car sit there and idle.

Mach 1 03-09-2001 05:58 AM

No, it wont wear out the motor, that what they are supposed to do. Most 4 and 6 bangers turn 3000 rpm or more on the highway anyway.

You can go 60 mph at 1000 rpm? Wow, thats low. Are you sure? I would guess at least 1400 rpm or higher.

I dont think i would compare cruising at low rpm to the same as idleing. Theres no laod on the motor at idle, although i guess the lower the rpms, the lower potential for wear, but I dont think it really would be hard on the engine cruising at 3K. Higher rpm wear occurs when you racing, and winding up to 500-6000 rpm.
